Okavango Delta
Okavango Delta
Botswana: National Parks and Natural Beauty
A Luxury Botswana Safari would be incomplete with out a visit to the largest inland delta in the world, the Okavango Delta, one of the most scenic and wild regions of Africa. At the heart of the Okavango Delta is the Moremi Wildlife Reserve although most of the Okavango Delta is protected by a network of private reserves and concessions. In summer the flood arrives from the highlands of Angola and forms a huge network of water channels and lagoons which are eventually soaked up by the Kalahari Desert. The floods reach their peak in May and then gradually subside. The constant change in water levels results in a remarkable variety of habitats and landscapes. This lush wilderness of papyrus swamps and shallow reed beds make it a world class destination for wildlife watching and safari. Herds of impala and tssessebe are easily seen along with lechwe and the rare sitatunga. Predators including lions, cheetahs and wildogs hunt in the open grasslands, naturally hippos and crocodiles are present in the many water channels. Gliding through the channels in a mokoro (dug out canoe) gives a unique perspective and it’s a great way to explore the Okavango Delta and watch wildlife at eye level or find yourself looking up at an elephant on one of the islands.
