The Kruger National Park
Situated in the north east of South Africa this area is hugely popular with overseas
tourists. The area is synonymous with the Big Five game experience. Access to the
region is easy with regular direct flights from Europe to Johannesburg which are
timed to meet the frequent connections to the new Kruger/Mpumalanga International
Airport. Many visitors choose to self-drive this route. It’s an easy journey from
Johannesburg and driving times range from between 4 - 5 hours depending on which
area you are visiting. We recommend that you take in the famous Panorama Route through
the rugged mountain range of the northern Drakensberg. The most spectacular stretch
of the route is the dramatic Blyde River Canyon.
The Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest and most diverse reserve is also
one of its oldest. The Kruger is justifiably famous for regular viewing of the Big
Five as well as rarer highlights such as cheetah and African wild dogs. Visitors
can expect to see some 30 mammal species in a typical three day visit. There are
a number of private reserves adjacent to the park that offer an exclusive safari
experience.
The Sabi Sands Game Reserve, situated in the southern area of Kruger is by far the
most popular, there are several up market lodges here where you can enjoy an unsurpassed
safari experience. The Timbivati and Thornybush Game Reserves are situated in the
northern regions and although less popular in comparison to the Sabi Sands area,
there are some really special lodges to choose from. Cost is comparably more expensive
when staying at a private lodge, but no one ever regrets paying a bit more for the
unique experience of a private reserve.
You can easily combine a visit to the Kruger region with time in the Cape region
via the network of domestic flights.
