Safari Overview

A classic Northern Circuit tourKatavi is one of the most remote parks in Africa and typically receives a mree 200 visitors a year, the perfect destination for the seasoned safasri traveller, leopard sightings are particularly good here. Set on the border of Tanzania, Zambia, Burundi and the Congo, Lake Tanganyika is Africa’s largest freshwater lake. Its deep waters are still plied by traditional fishing dhows and surround Mahale Mountains National Park, one of Tanzania’s most remote locations. Accessible only by small aircraft, an encounter with the one of the habituated chimpanzee families at Mahale is an unforgettable experience.

Trip Itinerary


Days 1 - 3

On arrival at Dar es Salaam connect by light aircraft transfer to Katavi for a 3 nights stay. Katavi National Park is a place of dramatic scenery, rich wildlife and unadulterated wilderness. This is one of the most remote parks in Africa and last year only received around 200 visitors, all in an area with the same game concentrations as the Serengeti. Leopard sightings are particularly good here. There is plenty of time to relax and enjoy the wilderness and your chosen safari activities either walking or day and night drives in open 4 wheel drive vehicles.
Accommodation: Overnight at Chada

Days 4 - 6

Transfer by light aircraft to Mahale Greystoke for a 3 night stay. Mahale Mountains. Much larger and even more remote than Gombe, Mahale has an incredible biodiversity. The chimpanzee population here is around 700, the park also offers good sightings of buffalo, elephant, giraffe and zebra. There are no roads, so you have the wonderful opportunity to explore the mountains on foot. Mahale Greystoke camp is on the banks of Lake Tanganyika where you can relax on the beach or for the active there is the opportunity for some freshwater snorkeling.

Day 7 - 10

Light aircraft transfer to Arusha for flights to Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. Four night beach stay.

Day 11

Transfer to Zanzibar airport for international connections.
