A glimpse at the wildness of Africa

Tanzania is a land of stark contrasts. It is the largest country in East Africa, here you will find Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, Africa’s lowest point – the lakebed of Tanganyika. The world’s largest game reserve, the Selous is within Tanzania’s borders and covers an area larger that Switzerland. Off the coast of Tanzania are the beautiful and historic spice islands of Zanzibar and Pemba.

One of Tanzania’s biggest attraction has to be the wildlife, the Serengeti National Park is the most famous. Tanzania plays host to probably the world’s greatest migration each year when over 1,000,000 wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 300,000 gazelle trek 800km north to the pastures of Kenya. The Indian Ocean on Tanzania’s east coast gives the traveller an opportunity to relax on white sand beaches by breath-taking coral gardens and meditate on all they have witnessed on their trip.

Tanzania Safaris

Planning your safari to Tanzania

Tanzania really does have a great deal to offer whether you want to chill out, be challenged, or take an exciting wildlife safari. An average 2 week safari and beach holiday will cost from about £2000 per person, plus international flights of around £500 pp.

When to travel? Tanzania has two main rainy seasons; November – December is the time for the short rains. March – May for the long rains, this refers to season not intensity. There is never a bad time to travel as each season has it’s own attractions and highlights depending on your interests, for example the Serengeti is incredibly beautiful in the wet season.

Wildlife is the biggest attraction and you can easily visit a couple of national parks/reserves in a week, most visitors will then add some beach time on one of the Indian Ocean islands.

Our Northern Circuit safari is a fine introduction to safari at any time of year. We can help you choose the best location for your camp, based on seasonal game movements. The annual wildebeest migration is often a focus when planning a trip to this area. The migration is a constant cycle of movement and dispersal so it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. From January-March the plains of the southern Serengeti is the place to be, this is when the wildebeest calves are born, a magnet for predators who come to feed on the easy pickings.

Our Southern Circuit safari offers exceptional dry season game viewing so these areas are best visited from June – November. If you are looking for exclusivity and personal service in a traditional style this is the trip for you. This can easily be combined with beach time on Mafia Island.

For the seasoned safari traveller looking for a remote wilderness experience then we'd recommend our Mahale Mountains and Katavi safari. Katavi is one of the most remote parks in Africa and has the same concentrations of game as the Serengeti yet it only receives around 200 visitors a year. Most of the area is only accessible in the dry season from late June to November. Mahale Mountains has an incredible biodiversity but it particularly famous for chimp tracking, the park is only accessible on foot.

You can easily add pre or post safari time on Zanzibar or one of the Indian Ocean Islands.
