11 Night North & South Luangwa Itinerary
This tour offers a remarkable wilderness experience and combines the best of South Luangwa with a visit to the untouched wilderness of North Luangwa, this is Africa, pure and simple the perfect trip for those wanting a sense of adventure and exploration.
Day 1
On arrival at Lusaka you will be met by a Mahlatini representative who will assist you with your light aircraft transfer to Mfuwe Airport for South Luangwa National Park. On arrival at Mfuwe you will be transferred to Kafunta River Lodge on the banks of the Luangwa River.A highlight of Kafunta is the natural aquifer that feeds a constant supply of warm, mineral rich water from the depths of basalt rock to the lodge’s hot spring tub, you can relax in the warm waters and elephant, buffalo and the countless birds that frequent the adjacent wetland area. The eight comfortable wooden chalets on stilts are set amongst lush gardens. Enjoy an afternoon safari and a night drive. Kafunta River Lodge 2 nights.
Day 2
Early morning and afternoon game viewing activities, conventional game drives or walking safaris. The game in the area is excellent – and includes many family herds of elephants and the endemic species of giraffe, the Thornicroft Giraffe. Predator sightings are very good and there are high leopard concentrations here, most guests staying for two nights will get to see them on a night drive.
Day 3
Head out into the bush at 6 am for your morning game drive. After breakfast transfer to Island Bush Camp. It’s a bumpy two hour drive to this remote area of the National Park. A boatman poles you across to the island. Island Bush Camp has just 4 reed chalets overlooking the river. Afternoon game walk accompanied by a guide and a scout, starts at 4 pm
Day 4
Full day to explore the island on the morning and afternoon walks.
Day 5
Depart Island Bush Camp early morning for the 2 hour transfer to Kafunta River Lodge for breakfast, a further 4 hours transfer to Wilderness Lodge, short break after arrival before afternoon safari activity (drive or walk).
Day 6
Depart early for the 6 hour transfer to Buffalo Camp, arrive early afternoon. There is a short break before your afternoon safari walk. In North Luangwa there are no villages and it is rare to see another person. In the dry season you can regularly see herds of up to 2000 buffalo and lions come down to the river to drink so there is always plenty of action.
Days 7-8
Two full days to explore this remote wilderness area on foot, morning walk are from 6am to 10 am afternoon walks from 4pm to 6pm.
Day 9
Early morning start from Buffalo Camp to travel 8 hours back to Kafunta expected arrival in the afternoon.
Day 10
Morning and afternoon game viewing activities.
Day 11
Transfer to Mfuwe Airport for return flight to Lusaka to meet with international connections.

The region offers a wide variety of places to stay ranging from formal hotels to informal holiday flats, game lodges and reserves, guesthouses etc. There is usually something to suit everyone’s budget!
