Zambia: National Parks and Natural Beauty

Lower Zambezi National Park

This National Park is downstream of the mighty Victoria Falls and follows the Zambezi River as it flows towards Mozambique (marking the border with Zambia), and eventually the ocean. The park is a wondrous place to view high concentrations of animals in the dry season as they migrate to the permanent waters of the Zambezi River. A real highlight of any trip to this park is the opportunity of taking a canoe out onto the water to view antelope, buffalo and elephant herds on the bank. While game tracking you can often see leopard, lion, wild dogs and hyenas. Bird watchers will be ecstatic with the vast array of colourful birds that reside here.

North Luangwa National Park

The Luangwa Valley covers most of the eastern region of Zambia. North Luangwa National Park is very remote but it I accessible by light aircraft. This mostly wooded park is one of the most spectacular wildernesses in all of Africa and is watered by the Luangwa River that enters the valley at the beautiful Chomba Waterfall. When the river recedes in the dry season, large herds of antelope gather at the remaining pools to drink. Often herds of more than 1000 buffalo can be seen as well as lion, leopard, hyena, elephant, eland, zebra, wildebeest and baboon..

South Luangwa National Park

This vast park covers the southern half of the 9000km2 Luangwa Valley and is home of the walking safari. This is a park for the real adventurer who wants to get a real feeling of the wilds of Africa. This park has the largest concentration of hippo in the world at around 45 per kilometer on the river. There are large herds of elephant, buffalo and over 400 species of bird. This is an excellent location for viewing lion and is one of the best locations in the world to view leopard.

Kafue National Park

This is the largest National Park in Zambia and the third largest National Park in all Africa, covering an area the size of Wales in the UK or twice the size of Yellowstone National Park in the USA. It is close to the Copperbelt and Lusaka. One of Kafue’s main tributaries, the Lufupa, floods during the rains and spills out over the Busanga plains. When the water recedes it leaves a vast area of lush vegitation that attracts huge herds of red lechwe, puku, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest followed by the occasional cheetah and lion on the hunt.

Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya (The smoke that thunders). In 1885 David Livingstone came upon this mile-wide gorge where the mighty Zambezi River roars over a ledge and drops 400 feet to the valley floor below. The Victoria falls are larger than the falls at Niagara and are one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. The mist from the falls can be seen 20 miles away. You can spend an afternoon gazing at the falls and exploring the local area, take a helicopter or microlight over the falls or for the particularly fearless, take the world famous bungee-jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge.
