Overview of Zambia
Zambia is often referred to as the backbone of Africa with the ebb and flow of this grand mesa bordered by land on all sides it is not surprising why many refer to it as the ‘real Africa’. Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River takes precedence when considering a trip to this mesmerising country. As one of the seven natural wonders of the world it supersedes all expectations with breath-taking views and fabulous landscapes. Zambia is well known for its fabulous walking safari’s and has a sparse ethnic population with over 70 groups around the country. This local population has been inspired by the legendary Norman Carr to conserve the lands of Zambia ensuring the varied habitat remains correct for those it is home to.
Zambia is estimated to have almost 45% of the total water-resources of Southern Africa, making it a country rich
in both flora and fauna. Zambia offers the traveller a range of beautiful safari locations but two worthy of note are the Luangwa National Parks and the Lower Zambezi.
The lush Luangwa Valley in north eastern Zambia marks the end of Africa's Great Rift Valley and it is one of the last unspoilt wilderness areas in Africa. The Lower
Zambezi is where Zambia takes its name from and is a prime destination for boating safaris, bush walks and animal tracking. These parks are one of the world's best
locations for leopard viewing.
Some of the most magnificent birdlife can be observed throughout the plains of Kafue National Park, the grandest of Zambia’s National Parks. Kafue remains remarkably untouched with nature talking its course and refining it to its own standards, it is a fantastic location for game sightings, fishing and monitoring the tropical birdlife. When travelling to Zambia by air you will be given the opportunity of arriving in either Livingstone or Lusaka, both of which are interesting cultural cities that are worth making a visit to, many travellers will choose to make an overnight in one or both at the beginning or end of their Safari.
Whether it is a family holiday, honeymoon or a luxury getaway you are after Zambia has something to suit everyone. This is Africa, pure and simple for those wanting
a sense of adventure and exploration.
When to travel
The dry season June to October is traditionally the best time to travel but each season has its attractions and highlights depending on your interests. These drier
months are ideal if this is your first trip to Africa or your wish list includes seeing lot of the big game.
The emerald season - December to May is a particularly good time for birders and for the elusive wild dogs. This is also an excellent time for photographers, the
dramatic skies and the restricted game movements make it easy to photograph large animals. The days can vary enormously from one to the next. Even within a day,
skies will often change from sunny to cloudy within minutes and then back again. It seldom rains long enough to really stop you doing anything, except travelling
on some bush roads. The South Luangwa is one of the National Parks to remain open during
this season.
Speak to us about your specific interests and we will advise you on the best time of year to travel to the region which suits you best. See our safari calendar
to gain a taste of what Zambia has to offer during the year.
How to travel
Wildlife and the national parks are Zambia's biggest attractions and most visitors combine safari time in one or two parks with a visit to Livingstone for the Victoria Falls and perhaps beach time in neighbouring Lake Malawi.
There are direct flights between London and Lusaka and regular connections from Johannesburg to Lusaka
and Livingstone. The majority of tourists to Zambia access the parks by light aircraft.
For the first time visitor a suggested itinerary would include a visit to two of Zambia's finest National Parks (Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa National Park) and
the Victoria Falls. If walking is the focus of your trip, head for
the bush camps of the Luangwa National Parks to be led by some of the continent's
finest guides. For those with a real passion for the wilderness we suggest a Mobile Camping safari and for seasoned travellers or wildlife / birding enthusiasts
we suggest you head for Kafue National Park.
There are plenty of combinations depending on season, budget and your specific interest, so speak to one of our Zambia experts who will personally tailor a trip
specific to you.
Sample Walking Safaris
Before I went on my first walking safari I was very nervous at being so exposed to the wild but after a few
minutes with my guides I felt totally at ease and safe in their hands. These guides are totally in tune with the bush, just like the animals around us their ears
appeared to prick up at the slightest sound and their eyes are like those of a leopard. Seeing animals up close and personal on foot is an exhilarating experience
and I am totally hooked on walking in the bush, bring on the next one. - Gregory Fox
Walking safaris are a magical way to explore the African bush. Naturally you cover less distance but when you step out of a safari vehicle you feel your senses
sharpen and alert to every sound you become part of the bush. Walking safaris are all about quality not quantity. Listen, smell and feel as you travel. Zambia is the home of walking safaris as pioneered by the great conservationist Norman Carr.
The following sample holiday is a Mobile Walking Safari. These have come to be known as THE wilderness experience of the South Luangwa. Following 2 nights at Nkwali Camp, the party drives up to the remote north of the park. For 5 days the safari follows the Mupamadzi River, covering approximately 10km a day. This clear river is a major tributary of the Luangwa. The area is remote and wild, the terrain and habitats varied and the game shy and unused to man. From ants to buffalo, a bird's nest to tracking a lion, you will learn the many facets of the bush....
