Chobe is the second largest national park in Botswana, and covers 10,566km2. The varied habitat which includes mopane forest, marshlands and rivers make it an ideal home for a wide variety of wildlife. It is famous for its huge herds of elephants (the population is estimated to number 60,000) which are though to be the largest surviving elephant population in Africa. This is big game country in the extreme and its huge herds of elephants share pride of place with enormous herds of buffalo and some of the largest prides of lion in Africa (up to 30 individuals in some cases).

Much of the Chobe is devoid of water during the dry season so the animals congregate in enormous numbers along the permanent water courses of the Chobe and Linyanti river systems. As a result of this high concentration of game the focus for most game drives are these riverine areas. Hippo, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, jackal, warthog, kudu, sable, and many more species are present and easily seen, making it a great place to observe and photograph wildlife. A relaxing boat trip on the Chobe River is the perfect way to enjoy the wildlife of the Chobe as the animals come down to drink during the heat of the day. Although a year round destination this area is at its best for wildlife viewing from about June to October when the animals move down to the vast floodplains of the Chobe river.
