Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp, Kenya


Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp is often heralded as Kenya's best loved safari camp. The Camp is situated on a private concession loaned from Maasai tribesmen on the western border of the Masai Mara, near the location where Out of Africa's famous final scene was filmed. Composed of Hemingway style safari spacious safari tents, the camp offers fantastic views out across the wild Masai Plains with the Oloololo Escarpment in the background. Not only do you get the excitement of sleeping under canvas and going out on game drives to witness the spectacle of the Masai Mara, but you are also able to see another hidden side of the Mara by taking night drives and bush walks made possible because of the fantastic location of Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp.

Location

Fly into the Kichwa Tembo airstrip, roughly 1 hour's flight from Nairobi and then transfer 30 minutes, game viewing en route, to reach the camp. To road transfer from Nairobi takes about 6 - 7 hours.

Highlights

  • Heading out on an exciting night drive which you are unable to do staying inside the national park. Leopards and other nocturnal species are in their element, it is a truly magical time to be out in the bush.

Children are welcome. Children under 5 cannot go on game drives.

The tented camp at Kichwa Tembo is the most amazing setting from which to base a safari. The modest building structures are very traditional yet maintain such high standards in maintenance and cleanliness that one could not epxress any complaints about them. The luxury tent in which we stayed was as far from a traditional tent as anyone could imagine, with hot running water, shower cubicals and electrictiy freely available. The staff at Kichwa Tembo are by far the most friendly I have ever encountered. They did all the simple things so well, that nothing was ever a problem. From the morning wakeup calls to the personal service waiter, we really couldn't have asked for more.

overall Kichwa Tembo was fantastic,accomodation was comfortable and clean and it was without a doubt the most memorable and special part of our honeymoon, the only fault with it that we had was two hyeenas came through electric fence and ran right by us outside our tent which was scary but the staff dealt with it straight away.
