A honeymoon in Kenya combines the classic African safari and barefoot luxury on the pristine beaches of the Kenyan coast. The lodges and hotels provide first class service in some of the most romantic settings on Earth.

Kenya is arguably the most well known of holiday destinations in Africa. Its quintessential images of herds of elephants in front of snow capped Mount Kilimanjaro, hot air balloons above the Masai Mara and the proud Masai warriors has drawn honeymooners for years. It is the land which inspired Karen Blixen's 'Out of Africa', a place of vast plains and abundant wildlife, coupled with endless white palm-lined beaches fronting the Indian Ocean. With every champagne toast at sunset, candle-lit beach dinner and every action packed game drive, a honeymoon in Kenya is sure to provide lasting memories.

Kenya has so much to offer honeymooner but generally a safari in the most famous park in Africa, the Masai Mara is a must. This classic savannah landscape supports huge concentrations of large mammals including massive herds of zebra, wildebeest and gazelle, large numbers of giraffe, elephant, buffalo and warthog, and of course the big cats – lion, cheetah and leopard. The Masai Mara is usually combined in a Southern Circuit with a visit to one of the Rift Valley Lakes such as Lake Nakuru, well known for its flamingo populations or Amboseli National Park famous for its scenic beauty with Mount Kilimanjaro dominating the landscape with its glistening snow cap.

For those wanting a more remote experience we suggest heading north for your safari and exploring parks such as Samburu or Shaba Reserves where you can enjoy the Kenyan wilderness away from the crowds and see northern specialty species like reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, beisa oxryx and gernuk. The ranches of the Laikipia Plateau are gaining in popularity with honeymooners largely because of the luxurious and unique accommodation on offer (Loisaba offers a romantic star bed option) and the diversity of activities such as quad biking and camel rides.

Activities in all safari lodges and camp across Kenya include game viewing activities such as game drives, guided bush walks, balloon safaris and romantic meals prepared in the bush. For honeymooners the camps and lodges often go beyond the call of duty to ensure that extra special touches are provided on this special holiday.

Following a safari most honeymooners want to head to the beach to soak up the sun on the Indian Ocean's beaches. Options here are numerous and include Mombasa and its north and south coastal areas, the islands of Lamu and Manda off the Kenyan coast, or even Zanzibar off Tanzania's coast. Lake Victoria, while not technically a beach destination is a wonderfully tranquil environment to relax after a safari. Some people even combine Mauritius or the Seychelles with a Kenyan safari. What you choose will depend on season, budget and the type of beach experience that you are after.

When to visit Kenya for your honeymoon?

You can experience a honeymoon in Kenya at any time of the year. Kenya particularly suits those couples getting married in the Northern Hemisphere's summer months from June to September. Although it is technically winter during these months Kenya's position so close to the equator allows nearly year round warm temperatures. From June to October the country experiences what is termed the dry season, which is arguably the best time for game viewing. From July to October you can expect to see the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara. Mombasa and the coast are comfortably hot during these months. The summer months, however, bring their own rewards on safari and as long as you avoid the long rains (March to May) you will have hot and sunny holiday in Kenya year round. See our safari calendar to discover what is on offer the month you would like to travel.

Honeymoon Accommodation in Kenya

We know the lodges and camps in Kenya which are most suitable for honeymooners. Accommodation options are varied but generally the most romantic places to stay are luxury tented camps. Forget all previous notions you may have about camping. This is the ultimate in camping! Most 'tents' consist of large bedrooms and bathrooms including all the modern amenities that you would expect in a luxury hotel. You just happen to be sleeping under canvas instead of concrete, in our opinion the best way to experience Africa - up close and personal with nature. Honeymoons are once in a lifetime holidays and we will ensure that you stay in accommodations which provide the privacy, exclusivity and luxury you would expect.
