I will never forget floating over the Masai Mara in a hot air balloon observing the wildebeest herds below, it was my 'Out of Africa' fantasy come true.
The Masai Mara National Reserve, part of the Serengeti ecosystem, must be the most famous reserves in Africa. This classic savanna landscape supports huge concentrations of large mammals. Here you will see massive herds of zebra, wildebeest and gazelle, large numbers of giraffe, elephant, buffalo and warthog, and of course the big cats – lion (found in large prides everywhere and it is not uncommon for them to be seen hunting), cheetah and leopard. About 37 black rhinos also live in the park, but are rarely seen. The rivers are home to hippo and crocodiles. The ultimate attraction is without a doubt the annual wildebeest migration from the Serengeti. The seasons have a strong influence on game movements but a safari here is an amazing experience at any time as there is plenty of resident game in the reserve.
July – October is the most popular time to visit. During these months the dramatic crossing of the wildebeest, zebra and gazelle herds is an impressive feature as they annually migrate from the plains of the Serengeti crossing the Mara River to reach the Mara's grasslands. These super herds are tracked by predators: lion, leopard, cheetah, and hyena, and circled by vultures as their journey unfolds. They return to the southern plains, leaving the Mara in about September to arrive in the Serengeti in great numbers by about November.
The Mara has developed a reputation as a minivan circus and this can be the case in peak periods. But remember everyone is there for the same reason as you so be patient and enjoy this incredible wilderness. At other times, especially during the long rains, the Mara can be almost deserted.
