Lilongwe is the country's capital and is where most people will arrive and depart. It is a pleasant city with some attractive wooded areas. It is not necessarily a place to include on an itinerary but if the arrival times into Lilongwe are late or departure times are very early or if you have had a very long flight to get here and want a day to relax on arrival we can include a night in Lilongwe in our itineraries. However, if you do need to overnight here there are a couple of options and rather than waste the day it is also worth asking for a city tour. There is a bustling market, and also a Nature Sanctuary with some excellent birds some of which (broadbill, red throated twinspot, Livingstone's loerie) are more easily found here than anywhere else in Malawi.
