Mvuu Wilderness Lodge , Malawi


Mvuu Wilderness Lodge nestles discreetly on the banks of a lagoon just off the Shire River in the Liwonde National Park. Mvuu means "hippo" in Tonga and the name epitomises the large numbers of pods of these water-loving mammals that float in the river. Liwonde, by its very nature, is about people as well as animals, so no visit to Mvuu is complete without experiencing some of the sense of culture and community in one of the villages on its boundaries. Mvuu Wilderness Lodge really comes into its own with its river safaris, offering fantastic game viewing and bird watching combined with luxurious accommodation.

Location

Mvuu Wilderness Lodge is accessed by a light aircraft flight to Makanga airstrip. This is a 55 minute flight from Lilongwe, 40 minute flight from Blantyre or 20 minute flight from Club Makalolo.

Highlights

  • The highlight here is superb river cruises where guests may get close to hippo, crocodile and wonderful birdlife.
  • There is a black rhino reintroduction programme and it is possible (with special permission) to visit the Rhino Sanctuary in the Park, which also has reintroduced Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and buffalo. This makes a special addition to your safari experience.

Would love to go back. Seemed so untouched. Safari's amazing-very personal, don't get loads of trucks on the safaris, saw all the game (several times!!), couldn't get enough!!
