Surrounded by calm turquoise waters you could be mistaken for thinking you are in an Indian Ocean beach resort and you have to constantly remind yourself that Lake Malawi is a freshwater lake. Likoma Island is undoubtedly one of the finest places to relax in Africa.

The small town of Mulanje is the centre of Malawi's tea growing industry, yet the main attraction is the vast massif of Mount Mulanje. Often misty, with the peaks jutting out of the clouds, one of the local names for this massif is 'The Island in the Sky'. Mt. Mulanje offers excellent hiking and trekking via a series of well-maintained trails, accommodation is in and huts, a fine way to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The highest peak reaches 3,000 meters, and you can make it to the top without technical climbing experience. Easier hiking trails can be followed along the valleys and basins, past thundering waterfalls with the towering heights as a dramatic backdrop.
