Kazuni Safari Camp , Malawi

Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve is roughly 1000 km2 of wilderness situated near the Zambian border south of the Nyika National Park. Kazuni Safari Lodge is set on the edge of Lake Kazuni. The reed and thatch chalets are inviting and airy and are all en-suite. They are comfortable, but basic, although the scenery more than makes up for this! Guided bushwalks and drives are on offer to experience the wilderness and tranquillity of the area. There is no electricity but lighting is provided by paraffin lamps which are lit at dusk. Game viewing as with any reserve will vary depending on the season but one can experience excellent encounters with elephants – particularly in the dry season, as well as good viewing of buffalo, impala, reedbuck and hippo. Superb birding is also on offer, specials include Pygmy goose and Avocet. The camp is currently government run. We can offer options to have a private mobile camp (in tents) on the Lake Kazuni Camp site as part of a tailor made trip.

Location

Kazuni Safari Camp is an 80 minute flight from Lilongwe, 40 min flight from Likoma Island and 35 min flight from Chintheche. The airstrip is a 20 minute drive from the lodge. A drive to Kazuni from Lilongwe would be approximately 6 hours, 3 hours from Chelinda and 2 hours from Mzuzu.

Highlights

  • During the dry season there are large herds of elephant and buffalo, impala, kudu, puku and warthog. Hippos are always present in the lake. Lion are also occasionally seen.
  • Birding, particularly at the end of the dry season and during the early rains is exceptional with many water related species which are not easily seen elsewhere.
  • Various places in Malawi boast isolated habitats for extremely rare birds and have become "musts" on all keen bird-watchers itineraries. The woodland around the northern entrance to Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve is the best spot in the country to get a truly very rare species, the White-winged babbling starling.

Customer Review

Honeymoon to Mozambique and South Africa during August 2010

South Africa Review

South Africa was spectacular - we loved seeing the city life of Capetown and then taking a short flight to Sabi Sands. We hope to be fortunate enough to visit one day again in the future.
