Ku Chawe Inn, Malawi

Ku Chawe is a landmark hotel positioned to enjoy the commanding views across to Mount Mulanje in the South and down to the old colonial Capital of Zomba below. It is within easy walking distance of clear running streams, mountain walks etc., forest, dams and a trout farm. Ku Chawe offers visitors the chance to unwind and soak in the relaxing atmosphere of this special destination. The old colonial capital of Zomba is a 30-minute drive down the mountain. About 110 kms south of Mvuu and only 1.5 hours from Blantyre Ku Chawe Inn is a good stop for people flying in or out of Malawi through Blantyre. It combines wonderfully with the lake and Mvuu as you get 3 totally different experiences all within an easy travelling time of each other.

Location

On top of Zomba Mountain about 60 kilometres south of Mvuu, 120 km south of Southern Lakeshore resorts and only 70 kilometres from Blantyre. Approximately 2 hours drive from Mvuu, 3 hours from the Southern Lakeshore and 4 hours from Blantyre.

Highlights

  • As well as visits to the town of Zomba, walks, birding and horse riding, if the road is in good shape there is a wonderful circular drive around the top of the mountain which takes in forest patches, montane grassland, and some spectacular viewpoints, the most famous of which is Chingwe’s Hole where the western edge of the plateau falls away dramatically.
  • You can also explore the plateau on foot. There are several walking trails, and maps are available from the hotel. The Potato trail (one hour) is a one hour trail from the hotel down to town (this is the track used by the villagers when taking their fruit and potatoes to Zomba market). There is also a hike to Nawimbe Peak (one hour) which affords magnificent views and panoramas. The trek to Williams Falls is about 2 hours, and along the way you will see a plethora of flora such as lilies, aloes, gladioli and the ancient cycads and fern trees.
  • There are plenty of activities and places of interest around Zomba including the Zomba markets, the well tended Botanical gardens, the Commonwealth War Graves memorial, the old Parliament, as well as taking in the sights of the many distinctive colonial buildings.
