Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort Hotel in Mauritius

Nikki O'Hare, Mauritius

I really enjoyed my stay at the Heritage Awali. It is very laid back and it has a lovely beach. The African decor is unique and the rooms are beautiful and a very good size. It is the kind of resort which has something for everyone. I particularly liked the fact that I could also visit the sister hotel Le Telfair for an alternative meal and if I were to return I would definitely be booking a meal at the Château of Bel Ombre as it is so spectacular. My massage in the spa was lovely and I loved lying in the relaxing kiosks of the spa gardens.

  • Nikki O'Hare

The 5 star Heritage Awali Resort, is on the ‘Domaine de Bel Ombre’, set between crystalline lagoon and lush green hills. With an ethnic décor that is synonymous with elegance... what "awali" means in Africa is a return to the sources, to the origins... and this African feel is evident from the time of your arrival with the unique sounds of djembes (drums) welcoming you. Heritage Awali is a beautiful getaway for couples and also ideal for family holidays with its exceptional range of services tailored for the enjoyment of young and old.

Rooms are spacious and perfectly fitted out and an array of land and water-based sports are on offer including a simply spectacular 18-hole golf course. For a bit of pampering there is the incredible Seven Colours Spa and the 'green' activities at the lush Valriche Nature Reserve will give you moments of unbounded enjoyment.

Room Types

Our Comments and Suggestions on choosing a Room Type:

The Deluxe Rooms are large rooms - all 52 m² - and can accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 children under 12 or 3 adults. The best rooms in our opinion are the beach front deluxe rooms as they have direct access to the beach - although in saying that if you are looking for complete privacy bear in mind that there will be people walking past your room on a regular basis. The other deluxe rooms are set back in the grounds of the hotel and form a block. They will either look over one of the pools, the ocean or the lovely gardens. It if it the school holidays and you don’t have children with you, we would suggest going for a beach front deluxe room to avoid being situated on top of the pools. The rooms themselves are very impressive with very large bathrooms.

The Suites are located on the edge of the beach with the addition of a sitting-dining room, living-room and a Jacuzzi in the bathroom. They are each 100 m². These can also accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 children under 12 or 3 adults. The suites are really designed more for a family wanting a little more space but obviously a couple wanting to spoil themselves will also enjoy the homely environment of these rooms.

The Villas is an absolute haven of comfort and space, with a living room, a dining room with separate kitchen, two large bedrooms each with its own bathroom, a children's room with its own bathroom, a gazebo and a private swimming pool. It also has a 24-hour butler service and a Jacuzzi in the bathroom.

Additional Information:

The Heritage Awali offers 5 rooms types to choose from including:

  • Deluxe Rooms: 154 (including deluxe standard, ocean view and beach front)
  • Suites: 5
  • Villa: 1

Room Facilities

All rooms are decorated in a refined style inspired by chic ethnic themes which conjure up an atmosphere that is both tropical and African. Each of the rooms is spacious and comfortable and opens onto its own private and comfortable terrace, a stone’s throw away from the two swimming pools or on the edge of the beach.

Each of the rooms and suites are equipped with:

  • Bathroom with separate Bath / Shower
  • Hairdryer
  • Air-Conditioning & Ceiling fans
  • Electronic safe
  • Satellite TV
  • Minibar
  • Espresso machines (Suites only)
  • Tea and Coffee making facilities
  • Dial-up Internet access
  • Telephone with Direct international access
  • 24 hour room service & laundry service
  • French and British standards electric sockets
  • CD & DVD player (only in deluxe beach front, suites and villa)
  • The suites can also accommodate a baby cot if needed

Restaurants & Bars

Our Comments and Suggestions on Dining at the The Heritage Awali:

Members of our staff have eaten at not only the main buffet restaurant but also at Infinity Blue, both of which were reportedly very good. Unfortunately time did not allow for meals at the Chateau de Bel Ombre which is ideal for a romantic dinner. The old world charm and views make it particularly memorable and the Mauritian menu is authentic and looked utterly delicious.

We have never before seen anything like what is on offer at the Spa Energy Restaurant. A little questionnaire beforehand ensures that the restaurant knows your ‘colour’ and your menu is designed accordingly to stimulate your chakra! It is a bit of fun if nothing else!

Additional Information

The Heritage Awali offers 5 restaurants and 2 bars.

The Balafon is the main restaurant which serves buffet breakfasts and dinners. The beach restaurant Infinity Blue offers Mediterranean and seafood cuisine and has stunning views over the lagoon. It is a great place for lunch and as an alternative for dinner.

Amafrooty is a poolside restaurant for an à la carte light lunch including salads and sandwiches.

As a special treat why not book lunch or dinner at Le Château de Bel Ombre which is 19th century manor. Set in grounds with large trees, overlooking a captivating French style garden, the Château of Bel Ombre is an enchanting setting to discover typical Mauritian cuisine while enjoying a breathtaking view on the mountains, the ocean and the golf.

For something very unique we recommend at least one dinner at the Seven Colours Energy Cuisine which is an innovative culinary experience designed to stimulate the chakras! The zen atmosphere and design are matched with an innovative culinary experience of the senses inspired by the Seven Colours concept, presented in the various “colours” menus symbolising the 7 chakras.

The Zenzi-Bar is a lounge bar place amongst the interlaced pools and with a lovely view over the lagoon. There is live entertainment here in the evenings. The Blue Drift Bar has a relaxed atmosphere where you dip your toes in the sand and enjoy a cocktail.

In the evening, local bands entertain the guests and create a party atmosphere on the hotel premises. Theme evenings (Sega, Indian, African…) as well as dances (band/DJ) are organised to ignite the dancer in you!

Spa & Treatments

The Seven Colours Spa:

Inspired by the oriental philosophy of the Chakras, the Seven Colours concept is based on the interaction and balance of the energies and colours that revitalise us. The Spa has a floor area of 3000m² and has 20 treatment rooms; vichy showers; steam baths; a huge sauna with cold water pool; a pool with eddying currents; divans in kiosks especially provided for relaxation and a consulting room where tailor-made treatment programmes can be discussed.

On the deluxe package you are entitled to one spa treatment per adult per stay (massages / facials / scrubs only). On the premium package you will a daily spa treatment (massages / facials / scrubs only) except on arrival and departure days.

Families

The Heritage is a fabulous resort for families of all shapes and sizes. Not only do all of the rooms accommodate up to 2 children under 12 there are also the suites offering even more room. The Kids Club not only provides a programme for young children but also for teenagers and the hotel provides babysitting services giving mum and dad a special night out. In addition to this there are activities at Valriche Nature Reserve that the family can do as a whole including hiking and quad biking. Of course that isn’t forgetting the pools and the wonderful lagoon which allow for safe swimming.

For added value the hotel provides a Family Offer during the winter months (mid April – mid Oct) where one child under 12 years sharing in the parent’s room stays free on the same meal plan booked by the parents (applicable in deluxe rooms only).

The Kid’s Club

Timomo & Friends miniclub welcomes children aged 3 (if potty trained) to 11 years old to enjoy many fun activities.

  • Some of the daily activities for kids include:
  • Workshops making Mauritian musical instruments or sweets

  • Playing musical and typical Mauritian games
  • The theme of our activities this year is focussed on "Discovery and Learning"

A baby-sitting service is available on request with supplement.
