Tamarina Beach, Golf & Spa Hotel Tamarina Hotel in Mauritius

Sarah Fox, Mauritius

Tamarina Hotel offers a unique experience in Mauritius in that it isn’t a large resort. It is a small boutique hotel surrounded by a stunning golf course. I would recommend it for adults that are looking for a peaceful retreat. The hotel’s introductory rates are staggeringly good for an all inclusive hotel which includes either all green fees on the golf course or daily spa treatments.

I was really lucky to have stayed in Tamarina and I loved it here! This hotel prides itself on the standard of service set and the manager here Dominique knew each of his guests by name! I had an amazing dining experience of a BBQ on the beach and it was some of the best seafood I have ever eaten. I would highly recommend this hotel for couples and for guests who enjoy a highly personalized level of service.

The 4 star plus boutique Tamarina Hotel, newly opened (Dec 2010) is a welcome addition to the Tamarina Golf Estate and existing villas. Tamarina hotel is on the West Coast of Mauritius and is an ‘all inclusive only’ hotel surrounded by nature and in an ideally shaded corner of the bay. The hotel offers guests peace and tranquillity in an adult setting. It is particularly suited to golfers who can opt for the golf package providing unlimited green fees. The alternative non-golfer package is in essence a spa package providing daily treatments.

Tamarina has recently been refurbished and as such all rooms are now decorated and finished to a very high standard. The restaurants and bars are ocean facing, and you can enjoy a pre dinner cocktail on the beach. This hotel is suited for couples, both golfers and non golfers and those who prefer a smaller intimate style hotel setting. All in all, this hotel is the perfect spot for relaxation.

Tamarina Hotel offers 4 restaurants and 2 bars. The meal basis is only all inclusive.

La Madrague Restaurant overlooks Tamarin Bay set around the infinity pool. It serves international cuisine with a ‘Creole Accent’. It is open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner which will be a theme buffet or a la carte.

La Plage Restaurant is located around the beach pool by the sea. It opens for light breakfast and all day light meals. As the sun sets La Plage turns into an exclusive, casual, simple and elegant place, where you can savour grilled lobster, fish or king prawns under the stars. A supplement will apply for dining at this restaurant.

Le Dix Neuf is a restaurant and bar up at the Tamarina Golf Clubhouse serving light meals and snacks and overlooking the 18th hole, the river and Tamarin Bay.

It offers exceptional views of Tamarin Mountain and the sugarcane fields stretching out to the sea. The restaurant serves typical Mauritian dishes and snacks.

Le Bar is the main bar situated in the shade of an old Badamier tree on a deck overlooking the bay. I is open from 6am for dolphin excursions until late at night following dinner. When the sun goes down, Le Bar extends onto the sand deck, where you can enjoy various, cocktails and beverages, lying on long chairs or comfortably seated armchairs, facing the sea.

Spa & Treatments

Located next to the reception, the spa has a dedicated area with 4 massage rooms each with its own patio and 2 double rooms from which one has a Japanese bath on the patio. The spa, which has been designed to harmonise with the natural surroundings of the property, will use a unique range of products specially created for the hotel using the local produce of Mauritius to revitalise the mind, body and soul.

If you opt for the non-golfer or the spa package, you will receive a personalised programme of a daily 45 min treatment (except on day of arrival and departure). These include massages, facial care and body treatments.

Families

Tamarina Hotel is not really suited for families. The rooms are small and don’t really make allowances for families. The self contained villas on the golf course are perfect for families so chat to a consultant about these villas.

Hotel Activities & Facilities

The Tamarina Hotel host many of the usual facilities you would expect to find at a four star hotel.

  • Glass bottom boat
  • On Site or Nearby for a Fee
  • Water Skiing
  • Fishing
  • Tube Rides
  • Dolphin Watching
  • Catamaran Cruises
  • Diving Centre (PADI and CMAS) – free pool diving lessons
  • Deep sea fishing
  • Tennis

We enjoyed our day out at Tamarina. It is a flat walkable course which would be its selling point for those not wanting to take buggies. It has a few challenging holes and overall a day out.

Golf

The 18 Hole Championship Golf Course is designed by Rodney Wright and is a Par 72 challenging course over 43 hectares of rugged savannah land framed with mature trees, crossed by the Rempart River. Golf is included in your stay under the golf package with unlimited access to the course. Carts are not included and are not essential.

There is also a Golf Academy offering training courses for beginners or an intensive course to improve your golf.

The Pro Shop at the Clubhouse caters for a wide range of golf associated products including leading brand golf apparel, clothing and accessories for both men and women.

On the Golfer’s Package as well as the unlimited green fees guests are also offered one 45 massage in the spa during their stay.

If a spouse or travel companion opts for the Spa Package he or she is then entitled to a Golf Initiation at the Pro Golf Academy of Tamarina: 1 hour practice with 2 sets of balls.

Honeymooners , Weddings and Romantic Getaways

Tamarina is a fantastic hotel in which to spend a romantic holiday. It is perfect for those wanting a more peaceful experience in a small boutique hotel rather than a large resort. It largely caters to adults only which is also an advantage if this is the holiday type you are after. The selling point for many ladies would be the daily spa treatments as part of the all inclusive package.

Tamarina offers a 40% honeymoon discount for the bride all year round. If it isn’t your honeymoon you can take advantage of the early booking offers, the over 60 senior offers or free night offers.

All Inclusive

All meals are included at any of the restaurants with the exception of La Plage for dinner where there is a supplement.

Drinks are served at all of the bars from 11:00 to 23:00 (all locally bottled beverages). The mini bar includes soft drinks and beer and is included. There is one refill per day of the mini bar.

If you opt for the Golfer’s Package you will receive unlimited green fees at Tamarina Golf Course (Golf Carts not included but not compulsory either). You will also receive one massage of 45 minutes during your stay.

If you opt for the Non Golfer’s Package you will get a daily personalised program at the Spa. This includes daily 45 min treatments (except day of arrival and departure). Honeymoon to South Africa and Mauritius during August 2011

Further to the general view expressed above about not expecting a resort apartment complex, this was a dissapointment to us. Not only would this be something I would expect as a tour operated hotel in Mallorca with a three star plus rating or the like, but equally it stood out in sharp contrast to the hospitality received in our other accomodations. Everywhere else we had stayed we were made to feel personally welcome, had hand-written congratulation cards, and were made to feel very special. Here, the feeling was one of cattle at initial reception, with the first interactions consisting of requesting the proof of marriage... Immediately this provides a very different atmosphere. In addition, although it sounds picky, to have hand-written cards everywhere, and to find a pre-printed letter here, just confirmed the initial welcome - being one of many, rather than an individual appreciated guest. Staff, and we ended up being spoken to by all levels of management, were very well intentioned in general, and multiple times a day we would be asked if all was ok. This took over though, as even when we left the hotel to eat outside, it seemed like the staff were keeping a file, with everyone knowing where we ate, asking us how it was, etc - it was a bit bizarre. The quality of the food was also less than impressive, as it clearly catered to the lowest common denominator, with the food overall being tasteless and uninspiring. Overall, it felt like a cheap package tour operator holiday. I understand, and I stress this, that this is probably what it was, and also what we paid for, and that what we wanted may not have been affordable to us - however this should be something we were aware of in advance, and for us to have decided whether or not to still go ahead in any event. The way it was, Mauritius was the disappointment of our holiday.

Possibly not below average but below what we expected of a 4 star hotel. The main problems were- 1. ongoing building work 2. food was not great 3. the spa was avarage, not really luxurious as advertised. 4. beach - nice views but there was litter on the beach and a dirty stream running through it.

Honeymoon to South Africa and Mauritius during June 2011

Mauritius Review

Mauritius had great scenery, although was a bit resort-ish with the amount of guests that were present, all appeared to be on honeymoon, which took away the uniqueness we had experienced in South Africa. Highlight - We found a horse riding centre in the south of the island, for which we hired a ca...
