Planning your trip to Mozambique

The beaches and islands of Mozambique provide a wonderful add on to a safari in one of its neighbouring countries. You can fly from bush to beach with convenient connecting flights from Zambia, South Africa and Tanzania.

The best times to visit are between May and November, when both rainfall and temperatures are at their lowest. It's also possible to travel during the early part of the warmer, rainy season from November to January but be prepared for high temperatures, especially in January. If possible, avoid the height of the rains from February to March, tropical cyclones can hit the coast at this time.

Off the coast of Mozambique, just inside the Tropic of Cancer, lies the tropical paradise of the Bazaruto Archipelago. A mere 20 minute motor boat ride across the channel from the town of Vilanculos on the mainland are the three islands of the archipelago lying in the middle of a marine national park. These beautiful islands offer pristine uncrowded beaches, palms, milk wood trees, sand dunes, scrubby forests, inland lakes all surrounded by crystal clear waters and some of the best dive sites in the world. The aquamarine waters hold a vast number of tropical and game fish species as well as rare creatures like dugongs, whale sharks and turtles, you may even be lucky enough to swim with dolphins. Conditions compare favourably with those of the Caribbean or the Great Barrier Reef but are not nearly as commercialised. Water temperatures range from 22°C in winter to 31°C in summer and visibility is usually between 5 and 35 metres, with an average year round visibility of 15 metres.

All of our recommended hotels have a full range of water sports including snorkelling, diving, deep sea fishing, sailing and cruising. There is also excellent bird watching and day trips on Arab dhows.
