Vilanculos and Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique
The Bazaruto Archipelago and the surrounding marine environment is a complex and unique ecosystem that has been well protected by its isolation. Africa’s version of Australia’s famous Whitsundays Islands or the Galapagos they are home to some of the most pristine coral reefs in the Indian Ocean and are home to one of the last viable populations of Dugong on the East African Coast line.
The Archipelago consists of 5 Islands, Bazaruto, Benguerra, Margaruque, Paradise or Santa Carolina and the tiny undeveloped Banque Island. The fragile marine ecosystems for which the area is famous for range from vast shallows layered with sea grass, tidal inlets, coral reefs and the deep Mozambique Channel. This huge variety of habitat have made a veritable tropical wonderland with a little something for everybody, whether you are looking to explore the reefs and shallows through diving and snorkelling or taking part in the wonderful array of water sports on offer including deep sea fishing for Marlin and sailfish, water skiing, windsurfing and sundown cruises on a local dhows. And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy there are always the beautiful white palm lined beaches for those who prefer something a little more sedentary and relaxing.
The islands are host to 180 species of birds, suni antelope, endemic butterflies, some crocodiles in the brackish lakes and 5 species of turtle which nest on its beaches. With no roads or shops they provide a true castaway island experience. Depending on where you are staying they are accessible via light aircraft or boat transfer from Vilanculos.
750 km North of Maputo lies the town of Vilanculos. Accessible by 2 wheel drive vehicles it has become important to public transport. Vilanculos has become the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago it has a number of good hotels and restaurants of its own. A small vibrant and friendly town it has most basic of the supplies and petrol available from some interesting shops and markets. The international airport has flights arriving regularly from Johannesburg, the Kruger Mpumalanga Airport and Maputo.
