Mozambique diving holidays
The lasting memories of my trip to Mozambique will be the friendliness of the people, the incredible scenery and the deep blue ocean. I can't wait to go back.
Mozambique offers some of the best diving and snorkeling in southern Africa. The dive sites here are uncrowded and visibility compares favourably with the waters of the Caribbean or the Great Barrier Reef. Water temperatures range from 22°C in winter to 31°C in summer and visibility is usually between 5 and 35 metres, with an average year round visibility of 15 metres.
There are a number of spectacular dive sites off the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Here sightings of whale sharks, not the easiest of species to encounter, are fairly common. The best known diving site here is Manta Reef where you can see huge manta rays with wingspans of up to 20ft, they look like huge birds gliding gracefully through the water.
Benguerra Island’s Two Mile Reef has a colourful variety of hard and soft corals which support numerous schools of reef fish such as neon fusiliers, coachmen and snapper. It is also attractive to game fish species, playful dolphins and occasional somber dugong.
Further north are Pemba and Querimbas. Fringing the archipelago are some of the richest coral reefs in East Africa, here you can see manta rays, eight species of shark (to date), whale sharks, huge schools of feeding barracuda, many species of king fish, red snappers, green and hawksbill turtles, pods of humpback dolphins, not to mention the humpbacked whales in season.
