The lasting memories of my trip to Mozambique will be the friendliness of the people, the incredible scenery and the deep blue ocean. I can't wait to go back.
The Capital of Inhambane Province, Inhambane was established by Portuguese traders early in the 15th century making it one of the oldest settlements in Southern Africa today. Inhambane lies on the Eastern shores of a large sheltered palm lined bay. The jetties at Inhambane and the nearby town of Maxixe are the Southern-most anchorage for the Arab Dhows or ingalaoa that sail the east African coastline. The seamanship and boat building skills of the local marinheiros (sailors) and pescadores (fishermen) are legendary. The town probably has the largest working fleet of dhows on the East African coastline which is an unforgettable site and adds to the romanticism of the region.
The coconut palm, of which there are roughly 2 million in the inhambane area, dominates the landscape. Individual trees are owned by individual families who send their young sons to collect the palm sap for the production of a potent wine called sura, a drink for which the locals have a great penchant for! The dhows, fragrant spice and colourful cloth markets, mosques and the little Indian owned stores lend an exotic atmosphere to this scenic town.
Sandbars and spits caused by longshore drift over millennia have created some of the most stunning beaches, sheltered coves and wonderful reefs for snorkelling, diving and fishing. Very popular with the tourists the beaches on the Barra peninsula are an ideal tropical getaway with white palm lined beaches and indigo seas. See our 7 day Mozambique Beach Holiday – Inhambane providing a choice of two reasonably priced lodges in the area, Flamingo Bay and Barra Lodge. A stay on the Barr Pennisula is beautifully combined with a safari in the Kruger Park, or elsewhere in South Africa. You could even incorporate a couple of days in Cape Town.
Exceeded our expectations. Level of service in both countries was excellent and the unspoilt environment was a real treat. The bush bath in Marlin Lodge was really great and the accommodation was fantastic.
