Overview of Namibia
Namibia is a land which attracts explorers seeking out awe inspiring landscapes and out of this world adventure. The terrain continues to surprise travellers as they move from dunes, to barren landscapes which have still managed to become the natural habitat for unique animals and plants. We are major supporters of those wishing to travel across the ancient Namib Desert where they will discover Dune 45- the largest sand dune in the world and a spectacular location to watch the sun rise across the desert. For unforgettable experiences and memories self-drive safaris are an excellent choice.
The most popular safari destination within the country’s borders would have to be Etosha National Park, a natural habitat for 340 species of birds and 114 mammal species. The parks flora and fauna have made it possible to sustain the wildlife in an otherwise barren land. Fish River Canyon is another fabulous stop to make where you can relax in the warm bubbling springs after taking a hike around the canyon. This is also an ideal location to camp for those on a self-drive.
The Skeleton Coast is an expanse of desert which stretches 300 miles along the Atlantic coastline, this natural wonder is home to many fur seals and can be viewed by air or by land. The nearby Kaokoland is an untouched mountainous range which is widely untouched and traversed mostly by the semi-nomadic Himba tribe, it is immediately visible how far removed this stretch of land is from the western worlds. The tourism in this area has had a small and recent boost by the introduction of Elephant and Rhino tracking safaris, an amazing way to discover the landscape of Damaraland and Kaokoland.
Swakopmund is a perfect stop for those adrenaline junkies seeking adventure activities. Here you can take part in dune-bike riding, free-fall parachuting and sand boarding across the dunes.
To gain a more savannah like experience on your time in Namibia the Caprivi Strip will match your expectations. This area of Namibia is much lusher than any other as it pulls on the wildlife and landscape resources provided by the bordering countries of Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. This section of Namibia opens up entirely different activity opportunities such as Mokoro trips and game viewing.
Namibia has a vast amount of sightseeing opportunities which have sprung naturally along the landscape. The sheer quantity of things to do whilst visiting this country makes it difficult to cover absolutely everything. Organising such a trip can become overwhelming if you are trying to fit too much into a set amount of time. As experts on travel to Namibia we recommend picking one aspect that particularly interests you and planning the rest of your itinerary around this aspect. The second focus is deciding on your time of travel, by making both of these provisions you will get the most out of your expedition.
When to travel
Namibia is a year round destination. The country experiences two main seasons: summer from October to April and winter from May to September. The summer period is characterised by massive rainfall between January and April, less so from October to November. Therefore, the days are hot and sultry with temperatures up to 40 degrees C. The climate is more temperate along the coast and in the mountains. The winters are dry and daytime temperatures vary around 23 degrees C. Regardless of season, the nights are chilly and the thermometer can drop to zero.
