Skeleton Coast Camp, Nambia

Skeleton Coast Camp is situated in a private concession area and has one of the most spectacular settings on the continent and calls to those seeking a truly remote wilderness experience. With its stark shoreline strewn with bleached whalebones and other skeletal remains, the Skeleton Coast is well named. It is wild and desolate, a place of stark, harsh beauty that yet sustains unusual life, from enormous colonies of Cape fur seals to the ancient welwitschia plant.

Location

Skeleton Coast Camp is approximately 2 hr 15 min flight from Swakopmund and 2 hr 30 min flight from Windhoek. The journey from the airstrip to camp can take anything from 1 to 3 hours depending on what you see and whether you stop en route etc.

Highlights

  • The contrast between the harsh environment and the animals that inhabit it make this area spectacular. Possible wildlife to be seen include: springbok, gemsbok, desert-adapted elephant, brown hyaena, black-backed jackal, and occasionally even lion and cheetah.
  • Cape fur seals are present in their thousands on the beaches.
  • The area has fascinating desert-adapted vegetation such as Welwitschia and lithops.
