Rainfall at Tau
posted in Botswana Safaris on Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Over in Tau in Botswana the first big rains have arrived bringing with them large numbers of game to graze on the fresh grass that has sprout up in the area. Water is readily available and is drawing predators to the area in huge numbers.

Guests at Tau Pan Camp were treated to a whole host of cat sightings last month which is a great experience for any cat lover. On top of that, four Lionesses have been spotted with a young cub of no more than 3 months old at San Pan. Lions would not normally attack Porcupines but an interesting discovery of fresh leftovers has been found. It appears that the Lions are forcing the porcupine onto their backs to get at the soft underbelly.

On Tau Pan a female Cheetah is becoming a frequent sighting as she has been seen scanning the area for vulnerable Springbok. Lucky onlookers have seen her nestled in the acacia thickets near the local airstrip.

Huge floor to ceiling windows were fitted to make the most of the amazing dune views. A shaded deck area has also been added to the front which will be used for star-gazing dinners and evening drinks. Each room has been refurbished with new furniture to match the main areas bright atmosphere.

Refurbishments at Jao Camp
posted in Botswana Safaris on Wednesday, December 16, 2009

Between the 9th of January and 11th of March, Jao Camp on the Okavango Delta in Botswana will be closed for major refurbishments. The main area and the guest rooms are being rethatched and we think you’ll love the look of the freshly thatched roofs. The Jao Spa is also getting a makeover with the addition of a double treatment room and the provision of water therapies for you to enjoy. Jao Camp is well known for its relaxing atmosphere and these new refurbishments wish to take it to a new level.

A staff member tells us, "Jao is very much about relaxation and surrounded as it is by the beautiful Delta environment we would like to give our guests the opportunity to rejuvenate in a safari spa, which will be green and eco-friendly, with the focus on traditional African treatments."

Chitabe Camps Tree House
posted in Botswana Safaris on Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Chitabe Camp in Botswana has announced they are building a children’s tree house with a “Robinson Crusoe” feel to it. The area will be filled with a library of African storybooks as well as flora and fauna books. The tree house is aimed for children and is complete with comfortable cushions where they can laze and read the material that’s on offer. There will be a number of activities available: painting ceramics and fabrics (all with animal themes), puzzles, a sandpit, clay for molding animals and a CD player for listening to animal and bird calls. Children will be entertained for hours in the tree house and it will keep them occupied between game drives, giving parents a chance to have a quick afternoon siesta.

The Kalahari Plains Camp is still on track to open very soon in December and is looking spectacular. The majority of the camp will be powered by in-house solar power generators and the guttering that functions from rainwater. Solar water heaters have been installed in each tent. Kalahari Plains is now one of the most eco-friendly camps to date.

Arguably one of nature’s greatest sights is the Wildebeest migration. The Wildebeest have moved to southern Tanzania with the dramatic and exhilarating event now best viewed at the remote tented camp, Sanctuary Kusini. The herds have returned followed closely by hungry predators. The old rivalries between the migrating Wildebeest and Cheetah create some spectacular and unmissable game sightings. This truly is an unforgettable event and one that you will never forget.

Eco-Friendly Tanzania
posted in Tanzania News on Wednesday, December 2, 2009

November of this year has seen Regional Air Services in Tanzania offsetting some of the company’s carbon footprint with ‘Carbon Tanzania’; a scientific and authentic environmental organisation. Carbon Tanzania, to which regional offset funds will be channelled, is aiming to protect and regenerate existing indigenous forests throughout Tanzania via community-based natural resource management. Currently the project has focused on the forest in Arkaria Village, Monduli Hills, 40km west of Arusha. Regional endeavours are trying to be as eco-friendly as possible throughout the operations. For example, motor vehicles have been replaced with bicycles and plastic water bottles are being sent to be crushed making them easier to recycle. Office paper is recycled and office waste is composted where possible.
