Self Drive Safaris

The popular self-drive options offer the independent traveller the freedom and flexibility to choose how they pace their day exploring countries like South Africa and Namibia. For those in search of the Big 5 the Kruger National Park in South Africa has superb facilities. Roads as well as signage in the national parks are in general excellent. Cheap and cheerful accommodation is provided by the parks and are popular for those on a budget. Should you wish to avail of the park’s guides, many parks offer guided game drives.

Self drives are also popular with visitors to Namibia, facilities here are particularly conducive to allowing the independent traveller to enjoy the country’s open roads. Most include a visit to Etosha National Park an incredible wilderness area. In most cases a park fee is required on entry into the park.

More adventurous travellers may wish to consider a self drive in the likes of Botswana, Zambia or Tanzania; however, unlike in South Africa or Namibia, a 4x4 is essential. Mahlatini can assist and advise you on the hire of such vehicles, together with any camping equipment required. We do, however, feel that these types of trips are a serious undertaking and not usually something we would recommend to people unfamiliar with Africa. The roads can be hazardous and a huge amount of fore planning is required.
