North Island North Island in Seychelles

North Island is quite simply the ultimate, a utopia for the discerning traveler. It is a place of barefoot luxury for those seeking an unspoilt, spectacular tropical retreat. It is one of the 'inner' islands of the Seychelles - often referred to as amongst the most beautiful on Earth.

Located around 30km from the main island of Mahé, North Island (or Ile du Nord as it is known locally) comprises of 210 hectares of lush tropical vegetation, coconut palms and takamaka trees and lies cradled between three granitic outcrops.

All the structures at North Island Lodge have been individually handcrafted in the distinct flavour of the Seychelles and blended to the sensory experiences of this island escape. TheNorth Island lounge, dining room and library, scenically located health spa and gym, world-class dive centre, and a rim-flow swimming pool are all built into a granitic outcrop. A sunset bar and restaurant are tucked away on the western beach of the island.

North Island is an example of an ecologically sensitive utilisation of a precious natural treasure. It is a Noah's Ark: a sanctuary where natural habitats are being rehabilitated and where critically endangered Seychelles fauna and flora are being reintroduced.

In 2006 Condé Nast Traveller Readers Awards voted North Island the 'No 1 in the World - Best of the Best'.

Our Comments on the Villas:

There are 11 handcrafted guest villas on the entire island, each constructed with a touch of understated elegance on the eastern beach - never more than a few steps from the pristine, powder-soft sand.

The Villas each measure 450 square metres (4,890 square feet) and have two bedrooms, a main bedroom and a second bedroom. Whilst the Villa is primarily occupied by one or two guests, they may have a requirement to use the second bedroom for children nineteen years and younger and this is available at an additional cost. Alternatively, the second bedroom can be converted into a study for guests staying in the master bedroom.

Each Villa has been individually handcrafted by Seychellois and African craftsmen on the Island. The principle materials used were wood, local stone, glass and thatched roofs. All this combines to form a warm and inviting space that offers guests that rare opportunity to relax completely. Each Villa is completely self-contained and is raised over a metre off the ground to catch the cooling island breezes.

A luxuriously proportioned master bedroom with change-room and writing area leads onto a large en-suite bathroom with marble bath and two showers, one indoor and one outdoor. The bedrooms are air-conditioned and all rooms have overhead “punkah punkah” fans. The fully retracting sliding doors allow for uninterrupted views onto the lawns and the turquoise seas in front of each Villa. There is satellite television, a DVD/CD system and Internet access. The kitchen leads off the lounge/dining area. A private plunge pool and sala are the finishing touches in this private sanctuary.

Your own private buggy means that you can choose from one of four stunning, pristine white beaches. An acclaimed chief is on hand to provide you with mouth-watering culinary delights, which you may enjoy in the restaurant, on the beach, in your villa or at the swimming pool.

Restaurants & Bars

Service at North Island is tailored to suit your needs and preferred lifestyle. This extends to your dining options. The kitchen staff tend the vegetable and herb gardens prior to harvesting to provide only the freshest food combinations to reach your table in the dining environment of your choice - whether on the beach, restaurant or Sunset Bar.

The wine cellar will enable you to select a vintage to suit your palate under the guidance of experts, if so required.

The cuisine of North Island is based on the diversity and cultural influences which, in part, make up the Seychellois Creole flavour. Culinary aspects of Seychelles, France and southern Indian spices are combined with the organic resources of North Island and the abundance on offer from the Indian Ocean. There is a “no menu” concept of dining on North Island and the chef, Troy Smith, speaks to each guest, explains the North Island cuisine concept, finds out personal food preferences and then develops the menus daily around this information.

The meal basis at North Island is Fully Inclusive including all meals and all alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and cocktails (with the exception of high end premium wines and champagnes on the reserve list)

Spa & Treatments

The Spa at North Island specialises in designing personalised holistic treatments to rejuvenate the body, mind and soul. On arrival at North Island, once you have settled into your villa, the spa therapists will be available for individual consultation aimed at personalising treatments to suit your needs. They design treatments that relieve stress, that are suited to after-exercise, that detoxify, cleanse and purify, that refresh and rejuvenate and those that provide finishing touches before leaving North Island.

North Island for Families

North Island does accommodate families. Whilst the Villa is primarily occupied by one or two guests, the second bedroom can be converted to accommodate children nineteen years and younger and this is available at an additional cost.

Honeymoon to South Africa and Mozambique during November 2011

Mozambique Review

Only saw a very small part of Mozambique but what struck me most was how friendly everyone was. Loved the fact the lodge was very community focused.
