KwaZulu Natal is often regarded as South Africa's most African province for it is the traditional home of the famous Zulu tribe. This is an area of subtropical vegetation, diverse wilderness areas and golden beaches.
The airports at Durban and Richards Bay are accessible via regular flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Alternatively, it is a 6 hour drive from Johannesburg to Durban and the northern Drakensberg or the battlefields are pretty much equidistant.
KwaZulu Natal offers an exceptional holiday experience. The Drakensberg Mountain range with its dramatic waterfalls and forested valleys offers a multitude of activities from excellent hiking trails to mountain biking, horse riding and trout fishing. For a deeper insight of the regions history we highly recommend a visit to the Battlefields of the Anglo Zulu wars. For the wildlife traveller a visit to the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park is a must. The area consists of an immense mosaic of habitats ranging from coral reefs and beaches to coastal forests. For a more traditional safari experience head to Hluhluwe-Unfolozi National Park or one of the private reserves such as Thanda and Phinda.
The KwaZulu Natal coastline has a number of excellent golf courses. From Amanzimtoti Country Club down South. Zimbali, the popular Umhlali country Club and the new links-type Prince's Grant are three highly enjoyable and top quality options on the North Coast. Whilst Durban Country Club is regarded as one of the top courses in South Africa.
The beaches of KwaZulu Natal are characterised by soft, golden sand, palm trees and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and are the perfect place to relax before or after your tour.
The following is a sample of an itinerary which we would suggest for those wanting to truly explore all that the beautiful province of KwaZulu Natal has to offer. It includes a beach stay, a safari, an exploration of the battlefields region and a visit to the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains.
