Rocktail Bay Lodge and Beach Camp, South Africa


Rocktail Bay is a secluded hideaway on the Elephant Coast nestled between the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, a World Heritage Site, and the Maputaland Marine Reserve. It is the location of Rocktail Bay Lodge and Rocktail Beach Camp, about 30 minutes drive away from each other. In this beautiful setting you can really escape from the rest of the world as you relax in your room among the forest canopy or enjoy some of the incredible dive sites on offer here, 15 of which there is exclusive access. With 40km of untouched coastline to explore you really will feel like you have your own piece of South Africa to explore.

Location

Rocktail Bay Lodge and Beach Camp is 5 to 6 hours drive up the coast from Durban. You will leave your vehicle for the last hour’s drive which will be in one of the lodge’s 4x4 vehicles along the forested dune roads. It is also possible to get a charter flight to Manzengwenya airstrip only 30 minutes drive away, or you can get a scheduled flight to Richard’s Bay roughly 3 to 4 hours drive away.

Facilities

  • The lodge offers a plunge pool and a boma where you can enjoy al fresco meals.

Activities

Scuba diving; snorkelling; excursions to black rock; outings to Gugulesizwe Cultural Village for quad-biking; horse riding; stargazing; Zulu dancing and sangoma visits; fishing; forest walks and bird watching. It is also possible between October to March to track turtles as they lay or hatch on the beach.

Meal Basis

Usually full board accommodation plus activities (Forest walks, snorkelling at Lala Nek and excursions to Gugulesizwe & Black Rock or Lake Sibaya depending on where you are staying)

Child Policy

Children of all ages are welcome. Under 3’s are accommodated free. 3 – 12 year olds are accommodated at a discounted rate.

Accommodation

Rocktail Bay Lodge - 11 tree house chalets comprised of 7 twin rooms, 3 double rooms and 1 family room. Chalets have en-suite bathrooms and outdoor showers and ceiling fans. Rocktail Beach Camp is made up of 12 tents on platforms in the forest canopy comprised of 5 twin tents, 4 double tents and 4 family tents. The tents all have en-suite bathrooms and ceiling fans. All rooms have sea or forest views.
