Amakhala Game Reserve – Safari Lodge, South Africa

Sarah Fox

I was lucky enough to stay one night with Mike, Justine and their wonderful staff. The rooms at Safari Lodge are gorgeous! I particularly enjoyed my candlelit bubble bath overlooking the African bush. Amakhala is my favourite game reserve in the Eastern Cape largely because of the people. The lodges are family run and the owners are dedicated to ensuring guests have last memories. I always get fantastic reports back from guests who remark that Safari Lodge is excellent value for money.

The Amakhala Game Reserve began in 1999 as a joint conservation venture. Today, six independently owned lodges of The Heritage Collection, are all TGCSA Star Lodge accredited. The lodges are owner managed by the descendants of the original families who arrived here with the British settlers of 1820. The lodges offer various styles of accommodation, which include two gracious colonial homesteads, two classic bush lodges, an historic inn and a Settler farmhouse.

Safari Lodge is tucked away in a valley of indigenous bush at the northern boundary of the 7000 hectare Amakhala Game Reserve. Nestled between Shamwari Game Reserve and Addo Elephant National Park, its location is ideal for the best wildlife viewing South Africa has to offer. This intimate thatched lodge with its unique air-conditioned safari huts offers all the comforts of a luxury five star lodge and is an undisturbed retreat where you can regenerate your soul and tune into the sounds of nature.

Family Holiday to South Africa during November 2011

Christo, our ranger, was exceptional. He worked diligently to ensure that we were comfortable, our questions were answered, and that we got to see the animals on our "bucket list." His good humor and enthusiasm were most appreciated and he was exceedingly knowledgeable about the animals. We felt we were always in good hands with Christo. Sienne, our butler, deserves similar kudos. He was gracious, accommodating, had a great sense of humor, and made sure our stay was comfortable and all of our needs were met. Our accommodations were comfortable and outfitted with everyone might want from a stocked bar to heated floors to aromatherapy candles around the sunken tub.

Only here 24 hours but the tour of Jo'burg was interesting and the Apartheid museum was definitely worth seeing.
