Amakhala Game Reserve
Woodbury Lodge, South Africa

Adam Chapman

In my opinion Woodbury Lodge has the finest views of all of the lodges at Amakhala Game Reserve. Sitting on the raised and wood deck area by the pool with G&T in hand watching an elephant herd passing by is truly a memorable experience. The rooms are very large and particularly well designed. As with all the Amakhala Lodge’s the owners provide an intimate setting which ensures plenty of laughs and a relaxed atmosphere at meals. The wildlife viewing is also great. I saw my first cheetah at Amakhala despite having visited the Kruger and the Masai Mara before this!

The Amakhala Game Reserve began in 1999 as a joint conservation venture. Today, six independently owned lodges of The Heritage Collection, are all TGCSA Star Lodge accredited. The lodges are owner managed by the descendants of the original families who arrived here with the British settlers of 1820. The lodges offer various styles of accommodation, which include two gracious colonial homesteads, two classic bush lodges, an historic inn and a Settler farmhouse.

Woodbury Lodge, situated on the beautiful Amakhala Game Reserve only some 75km from Port Elizabeth, is spectacularly set against a cliff above the Bushman’s River valley. It offers an intimate and tranquil experience of the Eastern Cape riverine bushveld at its best. The lodge has recently received a four star grading in recognition of its standards. Your hosts, the Gush family, will endeavour to make your stay truly memorable.

Honeymoon to South Africa during October 2010

Enjoyed it immensely. Tim our safari leader was especially good. Accommodation was slightly disappointing as bedding was a bit damp but food was good.

Holiday to South Africa during September 2010

South Africa Review

I loved it. I did not think it was so developed and so clean and there were no potholes on the roads. My conclusion is that I was very ignorant about the country. The level of developement I foundw as far superior to what I had anticipated and the quality of the food was excellent. In terms of crime...
