Day 1 - 3:

On arrival at Johannesburg International Airport you will connect with your charter flight to your lodge in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve which flanks the Kruger National Park. Spend the next three days partaking in morning and afternoon game drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles. There are no fences between this private reserve and the Kruger National Park and the game moves freely. The Kruger area is synonymous with the big five (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard) and offers some of the best chances in Africa to view these magnificent animals in an up close setting.

Your days will start very early with a wake up call with tea/coffee, following which you will be off for your first morning game drive. After breakfast spend the hottest part of the day relaxing in the shade or perhaps lying by the pool. Your second game drive of the day will take place in the late afternoon. As evening falls it is generally the rule that guests enjoy 'sundowners'. Nothing is better than having a cold drink while watching the sun setting over the African bush. You will then be returned to the lodge for a bushveld dinner and possibly more drinks under the African sky after which you can retire to your room to take in the wonderful night sounds of the African bushveld.

Day 4 - 10:

After your morning activity and brunch you will be met and transferred by light aircraft to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport. Depart on your flight with Pelican Air to Vilanculos in Mozambique. On arrival you will clear customs and then transfer by light aircraft to Benguerra Island and the fantastic Benguerra Lodge. Benguerra is the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago. It is famous for its unspoiled white beaches, remarkable dive sites and excellent fishing (subject to a strict 'catch & release' policy). Some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling in the world is available off Benguerra's shores with the surrounding coral reefs rich in sea life. The archipelago is one of the last remaining habitats of the endangered Dugong. Inland, Benguerra Island comprises forest, savannah, freshwater lakes and wetland eco-systems that sustain a diverse population of fauna and flora. Fresh water crocodiles can be found in the three lakes, bearing testimony to the island's mainland past. The island, which is home to approximately 140 bird species, was declared a National Park in 1971.

Spend the next 7 nights involved in one of the many activities on offer at the lodge including dhow cruises, fishing, diving and snorkelling, island walks, sea kayaking, castaway picnics, land rover trips, bird watching, village visits, sea kayaking, yacht trips and horse riding day trips. Following your activities you can treat yourself to a massage in the small spa.

Day 11:

Return by light aircraft to Vilanculos for your Federal Air flight to Johannesburg where you will connect with your international flight home.

Holiday to South Africa during February 2011

South Africa Review

We have been to South Africa before in February/March when it is the depths of winter in the UK. Envigorating to get away from our dismal weather and the South Africans we have met have always made us welcome. Where we have been, we have alway felt safe although we have clearly avoided the townships...
