Kirkman’s Kamp, South Africa


Undoubtedly the most prestigious game park in South Africa, the Sabi Sand Game Reserve is renowned for having the best Big Five game viewing in the country, if not the world. Located on the southwestern corner of the Kruger National Park, there are no restricting fences, thus enabling the animals to roam freely just as nature intended. The 65 000 hectare Reserve offers a spectacular African safari experience. Kirkman’s Kamp, with its spectacular views of the unspoilt wilderness and the Sand River, is regarded as one of the best loved lodges in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. A well known historic camp, originally built in the early 1920’s Kirkmans Kamp celebrates the atmosphere of an early South African lowveld homestead. The colonial atmosphere of gracious style and luxury has been retained, and guests step back in time upon entering the original homestead, which now houses the Lodge’s sitting, bar and dining areas.

Location

SA 5 hour drive on good roads from Johannesburg to the Shaw’s Gate of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Federal Air offers daily scheduled flights from Johannesburg International Airport to Skukuza Airstrip followed by a short drive to Kirkman’s Kamp. You can also fly into the Kruger Mpumalanga Airport which is approximately a 2 hour drive from Kirkman’s Kamp.

Child Policy

Children 11 years and younger are welcome (maximum 2 children 11 years and younger in triple accommodation at any one time). Regretfully, children 5 years and younger cannot participate in game drives. Childminders at an additional cost.

Kirkman’s Kamp offers 18 ensuite cottages with private verandas, separate showers, free standing baths and air conditioning.

I loved it. I did not think it was so developed and so clean and there were no potholes on the roads. My conclusion is that I was very ignorant about the country. The level of developement I foundw as far superior to what I had anticipated and the quality of the food was excellent. In terms of crime...
