Londolozi Private Granite Suite Game Reserve, South Africa

Adam Chapman

What I particularly liked about Londolozi is that it is a family run lodge and therefore the experience is that much more personal. Also for this reason Londolozi focuses a large portion of their attention on families particularly in their Varty and Founders Camps. Londolozi Tree and Granite Camp perfect for honeymooners and those looking for an extra special and fabulously luxurious experience. A particular draw card of Londolozi is that it is famous for is leopard sightings. All the leopards have been on the Londolozi concession since birth and the rangers have known their mothers. Hearing their family stories and getting to know the individuals personally is a memorable experience.

Londolozi is one of the original pioneering lodges of the ecotourism industry in South Africa and an unashamedly family run, stand alone operation. The root of the word Londolozi is in the Zulu word for protect and means 'protector of all living things' – an ambitious conservation ethic that Londolozi embraces in its sensitivity to the natural world. World renowned as one of Africa’s finest game lodges, Londolozi was the first game reserve in the world to be accorded Relais et Chateaux status, reinforcing its commitment to luxurious accommodation, fine cuisine and exceptional service. It is situated on the Sand River at the very heart of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. This rich wild wonderland assures exceptional game drives and a true wilderness experience. The four exclusive camps of Bateleur, Tree and Bush (Pioneer and Founders) are secluded in dense riverine forest on the banks of the Sand River, in the northern section of the private reserve. Each camp is totally private and self-contained.

Location

Londolozi Private Game Reserve is a 2.5 hour drive from Kruger Mpumalanga (KMIA) and a 5 hour drive from Johannesburg. Federal Air flights operate a daily flight from Johannesburg International Airport to Londolozi Airstrip, which is a five-minute drive to the camp. There are also scheduled flights from Durban and Cape Town to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA). Private charters can be arranged.

Highlights

  • Breeding herds of elephant and buffalo roam throughout the Londolozi area, while white rhino and lion concentrations are amongst the highest recorded on the African continent. However, it is the truly remarkable relationship which has developed over three decades between wild free ranging leopards and ranger trackers which makes Londolozi world famous. There is no disputing that viewing the leopards of Londolozi is one of life’s truly treasured experiences.

Holiday to South Africa during February 2011

South Africa Review

We have been to South Africa before in February/March when it is the depths of winter in the UK. Envigorating to get away from our dismal weather and the South Africans we have met have always made us welcome. Where we have been, we have alway felt safe although we have clearly avoided the townships...
