Sand Rivers Camp, Tanzania

Sarah Fox

This was by far one of my favourite camps I have ever stayed in in Africa. The views are literally out of this world and I loved the fact that I could not only hear the hippos from my bed but also see them! The rooms are the ultimate in luxury but bear in mind that they are open to the elements. The managers Steve and Lynn were wonderfully accommodating and my time with them and the other guests was so memorable. Dinners were spent under the stars followed by drinks and laughs in the open lounge. I will never forget my walking safari where I encountered a herd of elephants, so exhilarating! This will be an incredible camp for honeymooners and anyone just wanting to indulge in all that the Selous has to offer in a very unique setting.

The Selous Game Reserve, at a massive 50,000 kilometres square, is wilderness on a huge scale - the largest in Africa. Set on a wide curve of the mighty Rufiji River, Sand Rivers Selous was originally built by Richard Bonham in 1984 who used this area of the Selous for his famous portered walking safaris, when the area was all but unknown. The Sand Rivers lodge is both an expedition base, and safari retreat; it's small but beautifully formed, with an imposing mess, swimming pool, excellent cooking and careful, at-your-whim service.

  • Watching hippos and hearing the cries of the fish eagle from the deck at the main camp or right from your bed! The view of the Sand River from this camp is one of the best you will ever see.
  • Outdoor dining with the lodge’s excellent Australian managers
  • Sundowners organised at sunset from a nearby view point
  • Boat trips on the river where you can see plenty of hippos and crocodiles
  • Walking Safaris and Fly Camping
