Zanzibar and the Islands, Tanzania
Just 40km off the mainland, the Zanzibar archipelago consists of two major islands, Unguja (Zanzibar) and Pemba, and numerous smaller ones. The islands are justly famous for their beautiful palm fringed beaches and accessible coral reefs.
The Spice Island has a long and important history in the production of cloves, and has a 200 year history of trading with India, Persia and Arabia, resulting in a unique fusion of influences clearly visible in the culture and architecture of the islands. But it is the coral beaches which are the main attraction for visitors to this special island.
We often suggest before heading to the beach that you spend a night or two in Zanzibar's Stone Town (the old quarter) with its narrow alleyways, ornate houses, palaces and bazaars.
Accommodation on Zanzibar ranges from the eccentric, atmospheric hotels in the midst of Stone Town's narrow alleyways, to relaxing beach bandas overlooking the Indian Ocean. There are also larger resorts offering a wide range of mainly water-based activities such as snorkelling, diving and fishing. There are some very exclusive and romantic places to stay here, making it an ideal location for a honeymoon.
Lying to the north east of Zanzibar is Pemba which is visited by few travellers. Pemba is the perfect place to 'get away from it all'. The island is host to a couple of stylish resorts, our favourite being Fundu Lagoon.
If you want to explore the other islands and are after a peaceful retreat, we suggest Mafia and Chole, situated 160km south of Zanzibar. If you are looking for something entirely different why not stay in eco bungalows on the protected Chumbe Island Coral Park. The island is a rare example of a still pristine coral island ecosystem in an otherwise heavily overfished and over-exploited area.
Ras Kutani Area
This coastal area is immediately south of Dar es Salaam and boasts some very attractive tropical beaches and good fishing. The best lodge in the area is Ras Kutani owned by Selous Safari Company. This lodge is usually combined with a Southern Circuit safari due to its easy accessibility to Dar es Salaam. The lodge can be accessed by charter flight and by road. Usually people visit the Ras Kutani area after a southern circuit safari.
