Zambia family holiday
During our daily walks and drives we encountered leopard, hunting lions and had a few close encounters with feisty bull elephants but some of my best memories are of the 'in between' times relaxing in camp. As the sun sets gales of strange snorting laughter erupt as pods of hippos make their way onto the river banks for a night's grazing. Elephants frequently wander into camp -there is something very soothing about their presence.

Zambia can be a fantastic destination in Africa for a family holiday. The country has developed a series of 'safari houses' which cater particularly for families and provide the family with their own guide, specific activities and chefs.
Robin's House and the Luangwa Safari House in the south Luangwa National Park welcome children and individually tailor safari activities for each family. The owners believe that children should be included as much as possible and as such specific programs are designed for them depending on their ages and interests. There is a whole range of safari activities available including game drives and nature walks to learn to identify animal spoor and droppings, birding for beginners and learning to use spotlights at night.
Families can do activities together or the children can be looked after and entertained by the staff. Other activities available include safari packs with fun quizzes and puzzles, trips to Kawaza school to meet Zambian children, helping bake cookies in the kitchen and collecting eggs from the hen house. The older boys love going to the workshop for the morning, playing sport (beach cricket) or even having a sleep in, lazy morning and fry up by the pool.
Robin's House is an ideal place to stay as the privacy it affords means your family can be totally relaxed and feel at home. There is a wide range of children's books and games available including puzzles, cards, swing ball, paints and a sandpit. The swimming pool is nearby to cool off after a safari. If the group is more than five then the Luangwa Safari House, with eight beds, would be better suited.
In the Zambezi National Park a family's best bet would be Chongwe River Lodge or Kasaka River Lodge which offers a Bush Kids Programme. This would include: specially designed children's safaris; cultural visits to local schools and villages; bush kids activity books; pod and seed collecting; fishing for the legendary Tigerfish; African art and craft lessons; tracking for beginners and evening story while Mum and Dad have a peaceful dinner!
An ideal extension to your safari would be a trip to Lake Malawi or Livingstone and the Victoria Falls.
