During our daily walks and drives we encountered leopard, hunting lions and had a few close encounters with feisty bull elephants but some of my best memories are of the 'in between' times relaxing in camp. As the sun sets gales of strange snorting laughter erupt as pods of hippos make their way onto the river banks for a night's grazing. Elephants frequently wander into camp -there is something very soothing about their presence.

The Luangwa Valley covers most of the eastern region of Zambia. The area is divided into North Luangwa National Park and South Luangwa National Park.

North Luangwa National Park is very remote but it is accessible by light aircraft. This mostly wooded park is one of the most spectacular wildernesses in all of Africa and is watered by the Luangwa River that enters the valley at the beautiful Chomba Waterfall. When the river recedes in the dry season, large herds of antelope gather at the remaining pools to drink. Often herds of more than 1000 buffalo can be seen as well as lion, leopard, hyena, elephant, eland, zebra, wildebeest and baboon.

South Luangwa is a vast park which covers the southern half of the 9000km2 Luangwa Valley and is home of the walking safari. This is a park for the real adventurer who wants to get a real feeling of the wilds of Africa. This park has the largest concentration of hippo in the world at around 45 per kilometer on the river. There are large herds of elephant, buffalo and over 400 species of bird. This is an excellent location for viewing lion and is one of the best locations in the world to view leopard.

We loved Plantation Lodge. Beautiful gardens and lodge, fantastic food, great service. Really intimate and secluded. Great Place. Room was really nicely decorated, went for a lovely massage. A great start to our holiday. Mbuzi Mawe was a really cool place. Couldn’t believe the standard of accommodation – 2 four poster beds, robes, slippers... more
