Chumbe Island Coral Park, Tanzania

Chumbe Island is a coral island off the mainland of Zanzibar. Previously a military base it has recently been gazetted as a nature reserve along with several surrounding reefs. It is a financially self-sustaining Conservation and Education Project, managed by a non-profit organization, where funding is provided by visitors to the Park who stay in the stunning and innovative Eco-Lodge on the island. Accommodation is in 7 rustic, eco bungalows with solar electricity, compost toilets and funnelled roofs to collect rainwater. The emphasis here is on ecology and wildlife and is very different from the resorts on the mainland.

Location

Chumbe Island Coral Park is a short boat ride from Stone Town.

Highlights

  • The Chumbe Island Coral Park is a unique privately managed nature reserve developed and managed by the Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd. (CHICOP). It is a rare example of a still pristine coral island ecosystem in an otherwise heavily overfished and over-exploited area. The reserve includes a reef sanctuary, which has become the first gazetted marine park in Tanzania, and a forest reserve.
  • Being a Marine Protected Area (MPA) the focal aim of the Chumbe Island Coral Park Project is to preserve Chumbe Island's exceptional environment. Therefore they have built accommodation based on the state-of-the-art of eco-architecture and eco-technology.
  • It is a financially self-sustaining Conservation and Education Project, managed by a non-profit organization, where funding is provided by visitors to the Park who stay in the Eco-Lodge.
