Six Senses Gangtey Lodge is perched at 3,000 feet in Phobjikha, a glacial valley on the western side of the Black Mountains and overlooking one of the most important wildlife preserves in the country, home to the rare black-necked cranes who overwinter here. With just eight suites and one two-bedroom villa, the intimate lodge’s ‘Birdwatching Bridge’ is the central gathering point for lounging, dining and for unsurpassed viewing of the cranes in their habitat below.
The architectural design of the lodge incorporates local wood and stone to create a traditional Bhutanese building with wooden plank roofs secured by large stones. The dining room, which doubles as a sitting room, faces the valley and straddles a small dip. Its glass walls, complete with a telescope, provide an excellent view of the black-necked cranes that migrate here from Tibet in October for the winter. The eight Lodge Suites are housed in a similar wooden structure, offering equally magnificent views. All have balconies with daybeds and a telescope, as well as BOSE sound systems and a coffee machine. Higher up the hill, there's a spacious Two-Bedroom Villa well suited to families or small groups. The interiors at the lodge are warm and cozy, featuring log fires and beautiful hand-woven rugs that depict the endangered cranes. As with all Six Senses properties the spa is sublime. Meals are generally taken at Baa Zam, which is both restaurant and bar. Outdoor dining around firepits is also possible when the weather is fair.
