Amankora Punakha

The most characterful and intimate of Bhutan’s five Amankora hotels, the Punakha lodge is converted from a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse built by a former Je Khenpo (chief abbot of Bhutan). To reach Amankora Punakha, you cross a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River, adorned with prayer flags. The lodge boasts beautiful views and offers visitors the chance to experience traditional farmhouse living while enjoying the comfort of modern bedrooms.

Amankora Punakha, in part a traditional farmhouse, is located in a subtropical valley that produces most of the nation’s vegetables, and is also where the Bhutanese royals spend their winters. Eight of the suites are identical in design to those at Amankora Paro, offering views across an orange orchard and rice terraces. The four Mo Chhu Suites are in a new building, with two featuring separate spacious living areas. The suites can be combined to create two two-bedroom units. All accommodations include king-size beds, traditional wood-burning stoves, and banquette window-seats. The bathrooms are equipped with bathtubs, twin vanities, and separate shower and toilet areas. Dining here is a real delight with local produce and farm fresh veg turned into mind-blowing creations by the talented head chef. In addition to the small spa with steam room, there are some truly beautiful outdoor areas at this lodge. A charming courtyard is set up with a fire and lamps for outdoor dining at night, and the pool has glorious views over the valley.
