Where to Go on a Luxury Multigenerational Family Safari

A multigenerational safari is one of the most meaningful trips a family can take. It brings together grandparents, parents and children and gives them the opportunity to make life-long memories together in a beautiful place. It also asks more of the itinerary than most holidays. The destination has to work across different energy levels, interests and comfort requirements, without turning the trip into a constant negotiation.

At Mahlatini, we design multigenerational safaris taking into consideration each family’s unique needs and wishes. Our approach is shaped by on-the-ground knowledge and essential collaboration with our long-standing partners. It is also backed by recognition from the industry, including being named among the Top 10 World’s Best Tour Operators in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards.

What makes a destination suitable for multigenerational travel?

For multigenerational groups, a destination with the “best wildlife” is rarely the only deciding factor. The places that work well tend to share a few practical strengths... They offer straightforward travel flow, a good choice of high-quality accommodation, and enough variety in experiences for different generations to enjoy the trip in their own way.

Mahlatini frames multigenerational travel around balancing interests and energy levels, with comfort and downtime built in. If you haven’t yet planned the structure of your trip, start here first: How to Plan a Multigenerational Family Safari.

South Africa

The easiest multigenerational safari, with excellent variety

South Africa is often the best starting point for multigenerational travel because it combines strong wildlife viewing with a wide range of experiences beyond safari. It also works well for travellers who want a trip that feels smooth from the outset, with flexible pacing and the option to combine safari with a city or beach stay.

We love recommending South Africa to families—especially multigenerational groups—as it offers a really relaxed vibe and a strong range of lodge styles.

If your family wants to add contrast, South Africa also makes it easy to include Cape Town before or after safari, which many groups find helps different generations settle into the trip at their own pace. If you’re considering South Africa, a good starting point is our South Africa Multigenerational Family Holiday itinerary. Just remember that no two journeys are the same, and your family holiday will be completely personalised to your needs.

Kenya

Big landscapes, private conservancies, and experiences that engage every age

Kenya works well for multigenerational families when the trip is built around the right areas. Private conservancies tend to be the key. They allow more flexibility in how days are structured and often feel more exclusive than busier public reserves.

Kenya suits families who want safari to feel immersive, with opportunities to include culture and conservation elements in a way that interests children and adults alike. Take a look at our country-comparison and family destination guide, which should help your family decide whether Kenya fits your travel style.

Botswana

High privacy, exceptional guiding, and a quieter style of safari

Botswana is a strong choice for multigenerational families who value privacy and want safari to feel unpressured. In many areas, the model is low-density by design, which naturally suits families who prefer space and a calmer atmosphere.

Botswana also offers excellent variety for different generations because you can combine traditional game drives with water-based experiences, such as boat trips and mokoro safaris, which often appeal to grandparents and children alike. Explore our Luxury Botswana Family Safari itinerary, which includes a private vehicle and guide, offering more flexibility for mixed ages.

Tanzania

Iconic safari scale for families who are comfortable with longer days

Tanzania can be superb for multigenerational groups, particularly when you want a classic “big safari” feel with exceptional camps and savannas that stretch as far as the eye can see. It tends to suit families who are comfortable with longer travel days within the itinerary, or who prefer to stay in one area for longer rather than hopping between several regions.

For many families, Tanzania works best once the group understands the pace of safari travel, especially if there are younger children in the mix.

Zambia and Zimbabwe

Best when Victoria Falls is part of the story

For multigenerational groups, Victoria Falls can be a highlight that brings everyone together. The destination works particularly well when it is treated as a distinct chapter in the journey, rather than a rushed add-on. Zimbabwe and Zambia offer different styles of stay and different experiences around the Falls, so the right choice depends on how active the family wants to be and what kind of atmosphere suits the group.

Our Victoria Falls accommodation guide includes our best recommendations and is a useful starting point if the Falls are on your shortlist.

If you’re considering combining the Falls with safari, take a look at our Botswana and Victoria Falls Family Adventure itinerary. It will show you how to pair these regions without the trip feeling disjointed.
