Where to Go in South Africa for a Family Safari

South Africa is one of the easiest countries in Africa to take a family on safari, but where you choose to go makes a noticeable difference to the overall trip. I’ve seen holidays work brilliantly here, and I’ve seen them feel rushed or overcomplicated. The difference usually comes down to where you go and how much you try to fit in. For most families, it’s about keeping things simple and choosing one or two areas that do exactly what you need them to.

Greater Kruger for a Classic Safari Experience

If you want a traditional safari with strong wildlife viewing, Greater Kruger is usually where I start.

The private reserves like Sabi Sands and Timbavati are well set up for families. The guiding is excellent, and importantly, there’s flexibility. You’re not tied into rigid schedules in the same way you might be elsewhere.

Many lodges offer private vehicles and dedicated programmes for younger guests. This structure allows parents to enjoy the safari fully, while children are engaged in a way that suits their age.

For families travelling with younger children, it is worth noting that some lodges have age restrictions. Our guide to safaris for ages 6–12 explores how this can influence your choice.

Madikwe for Malaria-Free Safaris and Easy Logistics

Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the strongest options for families, particularly those travelling with younger children.

It is malaria-free, which removes one of the main concerns for parents, and it is easily accessible from Johannesburg. This avoids the need for multiple flights or long travel days at the start of a trip.

Wildlife viewing is reliable, and many lodges here are used to hosting families. They understand how to balance safari time with downtime, and they tend to be more flexible in how the day is structured.

If you’re travelling with younger children or doing your first safari as a family, this is often where I’d point you.

Eastern Cape for a Shorter, Flexible Safari

If you’re already planning to spend time in Cape Town, the Eastern Cape is worth considering.

It’s also malaria-free, and the travel is simple. You can move between Cape Town and the reserves without adding too much time to the trip.

The reserves are smaller than Greater Kruger, which actually works well for shorter stays. You can see a lot without spending long hours driving, which tends to suit younger families.

Cape Town and the Winelands for Variety

While not safari destinations, Cape Town and the Winelands are often included as part of a family trip to South Africa.

In Cape Town itself, you’ve got beaches, the mountain, space to move around, and activities that work for different ages, while the Winelands add another change of pace, even if it’s just for a couple of nights. Adding this variety to a trip helps the whole trip feel more balanced.

How to Structure a Family Safari in South Africa

The biggest mistake our Travel Experts see is trying to do too much. South Africa works best when the itinerary is kept relatively simple. Trying to include multiple safari areas in one trip can make the experience feel rushed, particularly when travelling with children.

Spend a few nights in Cape Town, and a few nights on safari in one region. That way you’ll maximise your time in beautiful places and keep travel to a minimum between stops.

Choosing the Right Area for Your Family

The right region depends on your priorities:

• The Greater Kruger offers strong wildlife viewing and a classic safari feel
• Madikwe is a malaria-free destination and well suited to younger families
• The Eastern Cape is easy to combine with Cape Town and has shorter travel times

Each offers a different way to experience safari, and the choice often comes down to how you want the trip to feel overall.
