Sanctuary Baines' Camp

Explore Botswana

Sanctuary Baines' Camp is an exclusive lodge named after the famed 19th century explorer and artist Thomas Baines. The camp is located on the Boro River, in a private concession neighbouring the Moremi Game Reserve. This area is superb for viewing all animal and bird species.

The camp features 5 luxurious suites set on elevated platforms in the tree line with wooden decks that offer expansive views over the permanent water of the river and a lagoon teaming with hippos and other wildlife. Each room features en suite facilities, traditional safari ceiling fans and a four-poster bed which, should you wish, can be wheeled out onto the private wooden deck for a night under the stars. An additional luxury is the opulent star bath where you can take an indulgent soak on your viewing deck.

Connecting the rooms with the main areas are wooden walkways raised above the permanent water of the Boro River. The swimming pool and the wide wooden deck that surrounds the main dining and sitting room is the ideal place to relax while observing the varied wildlife present here.

How to get to Sanctuary Baines' Camp

The camp is accessible by air from Maun (+-15 minutes) and Kasane (+-1 hour 30 minutes). The camp is a 45 minute drive from the airstrip.

Activities at Sanctuary Baines' Camp

Game drives, mokoro (dug-out-canoe) excursions, motorboat trips and guided walks. The unique and educational elephant interaction is also available (additional cost).

As befits a lodge which only takes a maximum of ten guests at a time this lodge was extremely good and offered amazing facilities especially when considering its remote location. The staff from the senior management down were all extremely helpful and friendly and catered for your every need. The food here was very good. Our guide here, Lena, was born and raised in the Delta and his intimate knowledge of the flora and fauna, especially the birdlife, as well as local customs made every game drive interesting even when large game was difficult to see. Special mention must be made of Crystal, the manager who was always available with a smile and good advice and who arranged for my wife to see a doctor as soon as we arrived in Chobe after she had developed an extremely painful rash after being bitten by a blister beetle.
