Kalahari Plains Camp

Explore Botswana

Kalahari Plains Camp is a tented camp situated in a remote part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The Camp offers one of the most remote experiences available in Africa today. The Kalahari Desert biome is a place famed for its outstanding wildlife with vast herds of antelope and legendary black-maned Kalahari lions.

The camp is beautifully situated on a low sandy ridge fringing a typical Kalahari pan and comprises ten Meru-style en-suite tents, including two family units, each with a sleep-out area from which to enjoy the night skies. The camp is raised off the ground to catch the breeze and take in the sweeping, spacious views across the Kalahari. Solar power provides electricity and hot water, and the innovative insulated canvas walls and roof keep the temperatures inside comfortable.

There is a star-gazing deck on the roof above the bar, and an open campfire area in front which dinner is usually served if the weather allows.

How to get to Kalahari Plains Camp

The camp is accessible by air by charter flight from Maun which takes approximately 1 hour or a flight from Kasane which is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

Activities at Kalahari Plains Camp

Twice daily game drives in open 4x4 vehicles and guided nature walks.

Great camp, staff and food. This was our favourite camp for the welcoming staff, food and drinks. It was a beautiful location and we hope to return here one day! The staff also went out of their way to celebrate our anniversary which was lovely.

My comments regarding the other two camps apply equally to Kalahari Plains. The semi desert terrain and the different animals, flora and fauna made a nice contrast to the other two camps. The trouble that the staff went to to provide a"picnic" lunch with tables, chairs and all the accessories near Deception Vally (about a 3 hour drive from the camp) was an added bonus as was the "Bushman Walk" Alex the Manager (from Zimbabwe)was very friendly and helpful as were all the staff and our guide Fanie was an extremely knowledgeable and formidable charachter. Top viewing experiences included: lionesses with their cubs. an enormous herd of probably 1000 Springbok on the move; seeing a black maned Kalahari Lion walking to a water hole in front of the camp while we were having breakfast. And of course seeing the special animals of the Kalahari: hundreds of Oryx, Steenbok, Black Backed Jacals etc. Also a distant sighting of two Red Haartebeeste. The green grass of the Kalahari after the rain almost looked like Ireland! Some of the desert flowers especilaly the lillies were spectacular

Amazing and quite different from the other two. Nothing was too much trouble and the room service was quite outstanding. Well above the call of duty to make up the bed and tidy the room during the morning drive on last day, even though check out was not until 11 am. Sleeping under the stars was such a special experience. Alex, the relief manager had such a lovely relaxed style, while still helming a very tight ship. I felt very safe at all times, despite being in such a remote location.
