Malabar House

A sumptuous heritage boutique hotel, Malabar House was transformed from its early days as an 18th-century Dutch colonial residence. It’s a haven of tranquillity amidst this bustling harbour city, yet still within striking distance of Portuguese forts, Dutch and British churches, Chinese fishing nets and Jewish shops selling local spices and fabrics. With only 17 rooms and suites, the feel is cosy and personal.

The design style is of a Moroccan Riad with the hotel’s rooms arranged around a central courtyard, open to the sky. The picture is completed with high ceilings, slow-turning fans and antique furniture left by the former spice trading owners. The rooms are of varying sizes and luxury including Roof Garden Suites on the first floor and Deluxe Rooms on the ground floor with 7 rooms surrounding the courtyard. The rooms feature antique beds, marble floors, heavy wood furniture and all the mod-cons. The alfresco Malabar Junction menu is both extensive and interesting and offers both Indian and continental dishes as well as excellent seafood dishes. Meals are had around the pool in the courtyard lit by candlelight and with live performances of Carnatic music. There is also a wine lounge which creates a magical setting to learn more about emerging Indian wines. For relaxation, there’s a small swimming pool, which sits rather awkwardly in the central dining courtyard, and a small spa. Walking maps and bicycles are included in the room rate.
