The Taj Mahal Palace

Mumbai’s most iconic hotel, the Taj Mahal Palace, built in 1903 has been cosseting guests in old-fashioned grandeur for generations. Its famous red domes, stained-glass windows and sumptuous interiors are synonymous with unadulterated luxury. The palace sits on the doorstep of many of the city’s trendiest restaurants, and hippest boutiques - that is if you can drag yourself away from the gin cart at the swimming pool.

Enjoying the best location in south Mumbai, the hotel overlooks the squawking seagulls swooping over the Arabian Sea. The palace is an ornately layered Baroque imitation of a Rajput palace with silk carpets, chandeliers, exquisite artworks and ever-changing floral displays. There are 285 rooms and suites between the refurbished old palace building and the modern tower wing. Each room is different in design, drawing from Mogul, European and Anglo-Indian styles. The Tower rooms are more contemporary with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and what they lack in historical atmosphere, they make up for with spectacular views. Both wings share the same facilities and are linked. Across the board, the rooms feature all the mod-cons you could ever wish for. There are 9 different restaurants and bars, serving cuisine from all corners of the world. The swimming pool with its heavenly pink loungers and gin cart is the perfect respite after a busy day out, and the Jiva Spa is the flagship of the entire Taj group.
