The standard of accommodation and guiding here is very high, and the chances of some exceptional wildlife sightings even higher. Kanha and Pench are prolific parks, both offering varied landscape and terrain, in the beating heart of India’s tiger country.
Transit through Delhi on your way into the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Located in the heart of India’s tiger territory, the parks chosen for this itinerary are both staggeringly beautiful and absolutely packed full of wildlife. Kanha is one of the last bastions for the endangered Barasingha, or swamp deer. Pench is famed for being the homeland of Mowgli, in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Both parks provide frequent tiger sightings, especially in the hotter, dryer months of March, April and May, but are also home to a plethora of other incredible mammals, such as leopards, sloth bears, gaur (Indian Bison), and dhole (wild dogs). Indeed, large packs of dhole can often be seen hunting in both parks – an exhilarating experience.
You will stay at Kanha Earth Lodge where you can expect some of the friendliest, most wonderful service found anywhere in India. Jamtara Wilderness Camp in Pench is exquisite too and offers very comfortable accommodations, with swimming pool, and good food. The machaan, or star bed, there which offers the chance to sleep under the stars is a novel and exciting concept. This is wildlife ‘proper’ with exceptional naturalists, a strong eco focus, and living heritage in tiger conservation. In both parks you will be in a private jeep with your own spotter and naturalist, both there to enhance and maximise your wildlife experience in this terrific corner of the Subcontinent. With luck you will have some superb sightings and leave with a host of memories.
