Explore the capital city of Colombo; get to grips with the country’s fascinating history and rich culture in Kandy; take a train to see scenic tea plantations; go on safari in Yala National Park and then chill on the island’s quieter south coast beaches. It will be busy but there will also be ample opportunity to give the kids, and yourselves some downtime.
The tour begins in Colombo, the capital, with a stay in the nostalgic 19th-century Galle Face Hotel, set along the city’s main seaside promenade. This follows with a visit to Kandy, the country’s second major city. From your base in the mountain retreat of Kings Pavilion, you will visit the Temple of the Tooth, housing the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. While in the area you will also get to climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress and learn traditional Kandyan dance techniques. There’s also the opportunity to trek to a rural village and learn from the villagers about their village life. From here journey to the Tea Country region on a scenic train journey. During your stay, take tours of tea plantations, hike to waterfalls and simply relax. A thrilling safari is next. At Yala National Park stay in an African-style safari camp called Leopard Trails. Here you will embark on jeep safaris in search of leopards, Asian elephants, sloth bears and many more. Conclude this memorable family adventure at Why House near Galle’s coastline. This is a fabulous place to recoup after your busy itinerary.
