A southern-circuit self-drive including two hiking trails.
After a night in Windhoek acquainting yourself with the country you will drive south to the Kalahari Desert which is in fact a fossil desert, it's less arid than a true desert making it home to a variety of wildlife including meerkasts, gemsbok, giraffe, warthog and black-maned Kalahari lions. Expect a landscape of golden grass, small red dunes and Quivertrees which can be explored on open-air 4x4 vehicles, quad bikes or walks with a Bushman (San) tracker.
It is then time to start the first of your hikes, the Tok Tokkie Trail walking safari which is a two-night/ three-day walking trail in the spectacular NamibRand Nature Reserve. The reserve's landscape varies from red sand dunes to sand and gravel plains and imposing mountains. The Tok Tokkie trail is a leisurely, fully guided, and fully-catered walking safari allowing you to get close to nature sleeping out under the stars, whilst still enjoying small luxurious like dinners out in the dunes, hot water bucket showers and open air toilets with incredible views. A back up team will do all the chores for you to enable you to relax and enjoy the spectacular surrounding.
A night of recovery will be spent in Aus, a tranquil little desert town, formerly the site of a prisoner-of-war camp. If you are still feeling active you can partake in scenic drives or explore the mountain-bike or walking trails or take a trip to see the herd of feral horses living in the desert.
The 4-night self-guided Canyon Klipspringer Hiking Trail is next. This is a 4 night, 3 day walking trail through the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon on earth. It is a landscape of meandering gorges up to 500m deep which twist and turn through ancient layers of rock. The flora of the canyon includes unique plants like the quiver tree and candelabra euphorbia and interesting game can be spotted too such as mountain zebra, kudu, duiker, springbok, klipspringer ostrich. Spend 4 nights sleeping under the open starry sky or in a tent.
Following the hike, you will head further north and will stopover in a small town called Keetmanshoop, before spending 2 days relaxing at Lake Oanob Resort. With its setting on the banks of the Oanob Dam offering superb views of the water and surrounding bush, the resort offers complete relaxation after some long drives, the strenuous hiking and busy sightseeing. If you are up for it, there is a host of watersports on offer but you may simply feel like putting your feet up before your journey home.
Your last night in Namibia will be back in Windhoek where, should you have the time and inclination, you can go shopping, enjoy some sight-seeing, or simply dip into Namibian café culture and sample some interesting delicacies.
